Double Lily Bloom

Parma, OH(Zone 5b)

With the curtains going down on the Lily growing season in this neck of the woods,
I will have to start daydreaming (planning) varieties for next season. Just thought
I would throw a question out for discussion. How do you feel about the new? double
bloom varieties? My personal view is that they are "different" but pricey I might
add. Although I certainly do not hold that against them. Do you feel differently
about them or are they just part of your overall garden? I'm sure some of you are
passionate about them but I haven't taken a fancy to them (yet!!) They seem to
be missing their internal parts. What next?

Parma, OH(Zone 5b)

Maybe I was too long winded the first time. I'll try again.
How do you feel about the double bloom variety of lily?

I'm not yet conviced that I like them, but that didn't stop me from buying more for my garden :-)

spelling edit!

Ditto what Lilyfan said. :)

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

I'm getting "used to them" now, but don't have any yet. Yet being the key word!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I loved them. They bloomed well for me in part shade and opened up nicely. I have Miss Lucy, Lady Liss, Lady Anabelle, Lady Jayne, & Lovely. My favorite of all is Lady Jayne.

I have been lily mesmorized, but this is nothing new ;)

I bought six of them last year and got so busy with other plants I actually forgot to look for their blooms. Shame on me.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

I might have one for an oddity, but the plethora of petals really takes away from the inherent beauty of a lily.

I've been on the fence about the doubles too. I've had the double Asiatic, Fata Morgana for a few years now, and do enjoy its flower power- a big impact from a distance! But like Lefty, I find myself thinking, "that doesn't look like a lily", or at least the qualities I've come to so love about lilies are diminished. Being a lily gluttonous fiend, however, I'll probably still try a double Oriental too, LOL.

I felt that way about daylilies, too, and have very few doubles - maybe three of them.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Then there's me. I can see the lily beauty in all of them, especially if there is fragrance ;)

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm kind of mixed on them as well. I bought some Elodie as an experiment to see how I like them in my yard. Maybe not fully double, but inexpensive enough that I won't choke about giving them away if I don't like them.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I thought they were quite nice mixed in with my other Asiatic lilies. I have Fata Morgana about 10' away from the Elodie and many singles in through that whole area.

Wow... nice!

Pirl, what's blooming in the far left of the pic?

Looks like some of Pirl's fabulous Iris!

Thanks, Moby and GS.

There's pink astilbe at the extreme left, white lilies behind, JI's and Sib's, then come the Asiatic lilies. If you mean the shrub it's a lace cap hydrangea. If I haven't named whatever you were curious about just tell me the color and I'll tell you what it is.

Pirl, your picture is really nice and very colorful. I can't wait to get my hands back in the dirt. I have grown several lillies in my gardening days and find that "alcupolca" I ( hope spelling is right) is a very fragrant lilly. Casa Blanca is another nice one. Once established they seem to put on a good show.
Thanks for sharing

They not only put on a great show but the fragrance in the air is wonderful. I have a bed of them around the corner from the area in the photo above.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Ahhh.....lily pictures....real lily pictures....

Beautiful picture Pirl, lovely garden and patio.

Thanks. We had it laid before we did any of the gardens and I'm thrilled with the way it came out and how nicely it has held up.

Wow Pirl!!! That is so beautiful. Thanks for posting, I think we all need a bit of "green" to go with out "white" at the moment. Please, post some more pictures! We need our lily picture infusion!!

This is one of my favorites: Asiatic lilies (no name that I know of) and a JI.

LOVE the color on that JI!

Why doesn't somebody start one of our 'winter boredom' threads? :)

Go to it!

Hello all! I have been away for quite a while but it is really good to be back. I am so looking forward to getting back in my garden. I have a large planting area that I want to fill with lilies, and have been looking at sources online. I found Garden Value Outlet, which has a limited but favorable rating on DG's watchdog list. The prices are great, but while I would like a lot of bulbs, say 100 or more, I don't really want 25 of 4 cultivars, I would prefer say 5 or 10 of each. Theirs are packaged in 25, 100 or more. I was kinda hoping there were some other lily lovers out there that might want to join me in an order. I am not picky about particular cultivars, but I would like some variety. Shipping to one address with an order over $99 is free. Also, (I'm ignorant and freely admit it) is there an advantage or disadvantage to having prechilled bulbs? I'm thinking that might necessitate immediate planting, or am I way off. Thanks!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Prechilled bulbs are fantastic! Find some other DG people that can share the order with you and make everyone happy. Just five people (total) would do it for you.

I made an error above. My double pink Asiatic lily is Aphrodite.
