Show me your favorite Iris
My iris is still very young, but I did recently get a September bloom on Earl of Essex.Hopefully it will bloom next spring and repeat in the fall. Since my garden is small I ordered rebloomers to try and get more bang for my buck.

This is one that I was given last fall. It bloomed for me several times in the Spring. The person I got them used to raise and show Iris, but his new large puppy made a mess of a bed; chewing a lot of them. He remembered I had been bugging him to give me a few. He loaded me up, but only three colors bloomed last year. He doesn't remember the names unfortunately, but I can still enjoy them.
Oh Gosh. That is beautiful. Mine are the old fashioned from my mother. Nothing very special....except they were hers.
That makes them VERY special. My Mother was not one to garden at all.
I here you -I have several Iris here that belonged to my grandmother and even great grandmother... my mom hated the dirt soooo I got them and they will go with me no matter what.

My favorite was Afternoon Delight - I rec'd it last year by mistake with a group of other irises I purchased - I was really glad for the sellers mistake.
Those are all gorgeous irises. I'm adding to my list of gotta-have's!
Here's 'Pheasant Feathers,' one I got last fall, but it's already on my favorites list. It looks like it is going to be a very strong grower.

I'll refrain from showing all my irises, but here's 'Jesse's Song,' one of my first irises. It never fails to put on an early spring show, even when conditions are awful and other irises are refusing to bloom. It blooms for several weeks and makes a big clump quickly.
Pheasant Feathers is beautiful - but I really like that Jesse's Song too. Purple being my favorite color probably has something to do with that...lol

I have only a few irises. Do all the colors do equally well here in the heat? Does any specific color family hold up better/longer than others?
For me all colors are equal... the lighter tones stand up better if the spring is very hot but one the whole they bloom so early for me the heat is not here.
My bearded irises are pretty much through blooming by mid-May, and all colors do equally well for me. My rebloomers are usually so stressed from the hot summer that they skip the fall bloom. When I get beds, etc., like I want them (lol), some of the rebloomers are going into areas with dappled sun so they don't bake quite so badly.
Right I have never had rebloom here...
I have never had a rebloom. Have changed my beds somewhat so maybe next year. Don't we all plan for......next year.
I'll have to keep track of how mine do. I thought irises needed full sun, but some are in shade at least part of the afternoon.It's good to know they will probably do ok, but I'll be disappointed if I don't get at least a partial rebloom from some of them.
I had one surpirse re-bloomer from some iris that another group gave me in some "noids". It was very short in statue, but put out a couple blooms this summer.
This iris has bloomed nearly non-stop since April. It bloomed throughout July and had three open flowers on it this morning. Yeah, its my favorite.

I have the one commonly called Cemetery whites ~ a favorite because it blooms early. This one is seen frequently planted in the old cemeteries.
I have the deep purple bearded which is incredibly fragrant and purple which is a favorite color.
A yellow which is a bit finicky but pretty when it chooses to bless me with blooms.
But my favorite is the old time favorite ~ the swamp iris. Otherwise known as the Louisiana iris.

Podster....I love the LAs too. Mine that I got last Spring 2006 were planted, grew, but never bloomed. I am hoping it was because they were inmature and I can get so action from them this year. I have several named varieties that should be sweet!

lily13 - I'm kinda like everybody else - would love to have a name of one that really blooms like that. Mine are done by around May also. Podster when I was a child those grew right outside my bedroom window and I just loved them.
These are the old fashions that I inherited from my mother. Don't know names of either one. Also inherited a lot of Dutch Iris and daylily. Didn't start gardening until after she was gone....for that I am sorry. But it (gardening) has changed my life and that is to be celebrated everyday.
Those are very pretty, I have some of the old fashioned ones that a friend gave me a long time ago, and they are so pretty, I have purple and copper but only have the picture of the purple.
I also have a Louisiana iris that I received at the College Sation swap very beautiful too.
Jo, I have realized that often I say "inherited from my mother". Someday I need to make a photo history. She was a fantastic woman.
Lou, those are lovely, I really like the pale pink it looks so dainty. Of course I don't think anyone doesn't love purple too. There is a thread somewhere about old photos that was very interesting. So good hand me down stories on there. That would be a nice tribute to your Mother.
Josephine, the LA Iris is so pretty. I am sure I got one of those from him too, but mine didn't bloom this year. I think I may have over mulched around them. Maybe next year now that the mulch has settled some.

Sheila, I have a treasure of photos.....shouldn't mess up this thread with them. They always make me teary......in a good way.....I'm such a soft heart.
Right, Lou, I understand what your saying. But if you look around the forums I bet you can find the ideal spot to start a thread and tell her story. Or you can post them in your diary and then post a link when you want to share them.

Sorry, I have not been on the computer for a couple of days. The name is Autumn Circus. Someone on the Iris forum ID'd it for me. One person there said that it multiplied too fast for them! Since when is a rebloomer multiplying quickly a problem? Not for me.

Here is a picture of Autumn Circus that I took just this morning.
Sorry, I do not know the name of the yellow Iris. I got them at the Texas Round-Up two years ago, I think that they were labeled 'Yellow LA Iris'. The foliage on them is extremely tall, nearly 5 feet, and I have them planted beside my pond where they have done extremely well with only late afternoon sun. Even if they never bloomed, the strong sword like leaves give great height and drama to the area.
Here is a picture showing them next to regular iris. They are the tall ones on the right.
