CLOSED: What is this orange ant-looking thing on my Brug?

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

There were about 10 of these running all over my Brugmansia today ... .especially around the new bloom. What in the world is it? And will it harm my plant?!

Here's a thread where it was decided they were Leaf-footed bugs. Yours look like those, to me, but some nymphs look very much alike. If you can stand them a little longer, the Leaf-foots back leg will widen and look leaf-like, whereas the Assassin Bugs won't.

The Leaf-foots suck plant juices and the Assassin bugs hunt and eat other bugs, so Leaf-foots - bad, Assassins - good. I hope this isn't too confusing.

Oh, and the Assassin bugs don't hang out with each other when they get older, but the Leaf-foots are gregarious at all stages.

OH NO!!!!!!!!! Can I use Orthene on Brugmanias and will it get rid of these??

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, IF they are Assassin bugs, that's a good thing, they will clean off the bugs from your brugs.

I wouldn't use Orthene since there are so few of them, if you want them gone just flick them off with a rag or something, they have no wings.....yet.

Well, I ended up using the Ortho Bug-B-Gone stuff. There were about 10-12 of them that dropped off immediately, and I hope I got them all. Not sure? But upon closer identification, they are NOT Assassin Bugs. I just found some of those a few days ago and they are pretty different looking from these. These things have the pokey backs and no long poker that comes down from their mouths so ... ? I don't want to take chances. I work too hard on those Brugs!! :) Thank you guys so much for your input!! Helped me a lot!

Amanda;
You've done the right thing to get rid of them boogers! Have you some milkweeds flowers nearby? They're identified as Milkweeds bugs. And indeed they're the bad guys. I've some Adenium nearby my brugs, they seem to prefer those Adenium and my Natal Plum over others. I flicked them off, they suck the juices out of your plants, seedpods ect.

From past bad experience, look for little white spots that show where they have been attached to the plant. I lost several plants last year to the leaf footed bugs.

No milkweeds that I know of but I'll be on the lookout for these suggestions! Thanks! I hope I don't see them ever again!!! (Although I don't mind the Assassin bugs, if I see any nymphs of anything that look life-threatening to my brugs and Hibs, I'm not taking that chance.)
