I got an alocasia lauterbachiana

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

2pugdogs: I like the way you think! Lol. I hope you're having a very Happy Birthday, by the way!
Deb

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Thanks AuntB and Deb

I just ordered two from Black Jungle. I got the Alocasia lauterbachiana for

2 / $7.99 / $15.98
Tropical Plant! Savings of 20% & More: ($3.20)
Shipping: Live plants and/or insects: $8.50
Sales Tax: $0.00
Total: $21.28

So my Alocasia lauterbachiana actually only cost $6.39 each. So now I wonder how big they will be? They were originally $9.99 then with 20% off made them $7.99 and then they gave me another 20% savings. Can't beat a deal like that.

If anyone is wanting one or two you better jump in before they are gone.

Another great birthday present. I wonder what I will want for Halloween?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Happy B day .Linda !!!
I like your way of thinking,I'd better check this black jungle out!!!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Very good, it is quite a bargain, but I bet they will be out soon! lol Yes, HAPPY BIRTHDAY Linda! How nice you are to make sure those were on your birthday list! ;) I don't think they are very big, I thought it said somewhere they are in 3 inch deep pots, so Deb, maybe got a good deal, anyway! I snagged a gloriosum philo, too... ON SALE! I really need it.. ;)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I like the idea of them being small so that way I will sure have enough room in the GH this winter. What I plan to do is mist it every day with water, or to put it in a small aquarium that I have.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

We just got a hail storm :( - It lasted for at least 5 minutes and was big pea size, I opened the french door to snap a pic, and it was coming inside! I haven't done a walk-thru, yet... but things don't look bad at all... I hope I'm not just in denial! lol I think I'm going to grow mine in the south window above the kitchen sink.... bright, indirect... with the african violets and whatever I end up trying to root from cuttings. What do you think?

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Sounds like you both have a good plan. Mine is about a foot tall and is in a 1 gal nursery pot (it was shipped bare-root.) I haven't decided whether to put it in my unheated greenhouse or my unheated but darker garage, or indoors in a heated and therefore dry but sunny south-facing window.

.....which is kind of why I asked the question at the beginning. :) I guess it's going to be trial and error and watch it carefully.

Deb

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I think it will be fine, either way... Tman lets his winter over dormant, isn't that what he said? I'm just letting mine grow cause it's small enough to have a spot to grow. I guess we'll all just try and compare notes as we progress... Just never a black or white answer, huh? It's that gray area that offers the best education, I guess. Trial and success, for us all, I hope! (so, Deb, have you seen a C. Stingray?)

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

AuntB: Stop that! I have seen "Stingray", and wrote it immediately on my wish list. I put it on my spring list, though. :) So don't tempt me to move it up! LOL.
Deb

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Okay, Deb, shucks, you're no fun! lol It's on my spring list, too. I'm hoping Brian has 1 or 2 down there in KY, he's wintering over for me ;).. I'm putting a governor on myself, cause sometimes - SOMETIMES- occasionally - I just get in a shopping frenzy! I took the plant trading forum OFF my favs, in effort to gain some kind of control. And, DG is just full of enablers to test my power!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Aunt B.I have let Alocasia Macc, and calodora and paodora go dormant with no problems,as long with the colcasia ears, this new one I haven't tried yet,but I don't see why you couldn't,if it was a large enough bulb, not sure about a small one or not.
Remember they must stay above 55* or they will go dormant anyway!!!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

So you're saying all colocasia? If the bulb is not small. I keep the regular ee's as bulbs, and I've lost some small, but some made it. Brings to mind my first Thai Giant. I bought 2, @ $25/ea+shpg, 1 for me and 1 for a friend. I got them about this time of year. They were about a foot tall. I was keeping them both over winter... or so the plan was... I put them on my front porch and said "now, don't water those, cause I'm waiting for the foliage to die back". HAHAHA, They finally turned brown and I had my grocery bag all proudly marked in big black letters... lifted them out of the pots and.. you know, d-e-a-d! I waited until spring and ordered the darn things again! I can't imagine the look on my face when I realized I'd killed them! My basement must stay above 55, I kept that Thai Giant alive and it put on a few leaves even. I should really put a thermometer down there. Thanks for the info.
Tman, if you would, Rox has a conundrum, I think you might be able to offer tremendous help... thx

2pugdogs: Did you get yours plants yet?
This is my "baby". I just repotted it and set it out for a while to dry out. It had gotten a bit soggy, one leaf had gone yellow, and I was afraid of rot.

Deb it looks great. I'm jealous you have yours and I don't. They haven't even shipped it yet. It is suppose to come by ups and they usually send out a notice by email when it is shipped with the tracking #.

Mine are in deep 3 inch pots. So they won't be near the size yours is. But they do grow. Anyway I hope they will grow and not die.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Oooh. Don't you hate waiting for the plants to arrive? :)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Yes YES

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I don't think even come close to growing as fast as the other varieties!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

You mean these are slow growers

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I got mine Friday (21st, about a week, from BlackJungle) ... potted them up a size over the weekend, 1 had foot long roots coming out the bottom... They aren't as big as Deb's but I do want' them to fit on the glass shelves above the kitchen sink all winter... I think I read they are relatively slower growers compared to other alocasia, but if Tman's doubled over summer, that's not very slow.... I really like their appearance... spear-like, so different and almost waxy shiny... and the underside of the leaves are pretty, too.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

No mine has doubled since March 1st,Alocasia Macc has did 10 times since March.thats a lot of difference.
Altho it was growing under some other big ears,so it was sunlight starved, but I would have thought it would have grown more.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Might be refreshing to have a slow grower- do they take any direct sun? I should snap a pic, so I can compare in a few months.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Mine only gets a few minutes of morning sun,but I bet it could take half day anyhow!

Ok just went and took a fresh picture,to my surprise, were about 2 1/2 tall.close to 3 ft,longest leaf is about 2 feet,or a little more,so it's starting to grow now the weather has cooled somewhat!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I can't wait to get mine.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Linda, I know how you feel......waiting.....waiting......waiting....... be ready to pot them up, the ones I got needed it. (from blackjungle) Thanks Tman - so they must not grow a lot in the scorching summer heat.... I like how they offer a different texture or effect than a reg ear, will make a nice contrast... Pretty! I have mine under a fluorescent light in my kitchen window above the sink (south side with mini blinds to keep out direct sun) do you think that is too much light? They both have a leaf turning yellow, but I thought maybe from the trip here and repotting and getting used to a new home? Or maybe too much light? I won't worry too much... until another leaf starts yellowing...

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I guess I won't be getting one.

Black Jungle called me this morning at 7:30 apologizing about the delay in shipping my Lauterbachiana. I guess they are out of them. She said I could go into there web site and pick something else out or they could just give me credit. I will have to go to Stokes and check them out.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Found one on ebay. I made a bid on it but was outbidded. I hope I didn't bid against someone from here.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

2pugdogs: Oh no. Dissappointment! Don't give up. :)
AuntB: Mine had one leaf that went yellow just after I potted it up, but now it's growing a new one. Maybe just stressed from shipping.
Deb

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Phew! Thanks Deb, I hoped it was the trip getting here, I'll leave them be and watch for a new leaf. Oh, Linda, I'm sorry they couldn't fill your order....... maybe Brian Williams has some growing, might d-mail and ask, or call him... (briansbotanicals.net).. I'd hoped to see your "I got my lauterb" post..

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

I've got plenty of healthy A. lauterbachiana if you want some! 4" pots! You would have them in 2 or 3 days. D-mail me.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Woohoo! 2pugdogs, there ya go! 2 to 3 days. :)

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

BTW, the plant I know of as Stingray is not a Colocasia, but an Alocasia. I've seen a big one and it's interesting all right, but looks like a genetic deformity to me! I prefer the batwing but I found it's rather fussy. Besides, the petioles are too long for my taste so I had to do something about it. I crossed it with A. odora and A. Borneo Giant and now I've got seedlings. They're lookin' good; the odora hybrids come in two forms, a light and a dark. Leaves are tough, even for seedlings. Wait till Spring 2008!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

So now I'll be buying your Borneodora GIANT stingray??? I hope I hope I hope! Sounds VERY cool, LariAnn. I can't wait! Your "job" is so fun, I wouldn't want to leave work! (AW, dang it, it's Friday! or TGIM?? lol) Thanks for clarifying Stingray is an Alocasia. But genetic deformity and long petioles are what attracts me to it. It's weird, different, unusual, unique, tropical and I'm really shocked it's so unappealing to you. Deformed??? That's almost cruel. lol I'm getting one or two (for more visual effect). Do you have any leftovers, cast aside, once used and verbally abused? ;)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I have two Alocasia lauterbachiana coming next week.

I just visited LariAnn web site. I can't wait until Spring of 2008. I want to get some of her huge EE's. When I start moving things to the GH I am writing down all the EE's I have, so I won't be duplicating any. I know I ordered two new ones from Brian and after I got them I found out I had one growing in the big planter and it is huge. There are three different ones in this planter. Next year I won't put three in it I think I will only put two of the same kind. They look a little crowded here, but they are starting to thin out now.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Wow! Very cool, Linda. It looks like a full pot! Do you water it a lot? It looks like they would drink it up pretty quick. Is there a tub or pot inside the pretty planter? I think you may have talked about on another thread.... (as I get more "mature" I can't remember things sometimes) I'm excited about LariAnns Big Ear Fest at Aroidia, too. I can't even imagine all the cool stuff we'll get to purchase, let alone seeing the things she's working on. And ALL us DG'ers??!!! FUN! (I do that too, duplicate... but that's okay, if I have something the same, I must like it, so 2 is double the beauty)

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

2pugdogs,
Someone up the street from me has the EE's that grow upward by the entrance to their driveway and on the opposite side of the street. They are beautiful. This house has a fence around it with a gate and every season, I see a landscaping co. redoing their beds. I told hubby if I see them, I'm going to stop and ask if I can have some of the EE's. They throw them in the back of their truck and trash them. :( I need them for my collection! LOL!!!

Susan

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Susan: They trash them??? Sigh. I just can't comprehend.
2pugdogs: So glad you're getting your lauterbachia fix. :)
Deb

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

One of my neighbors kids works for a landscaping co. and he says they pull the plants out and toss them in the wood chipper along with trees. How sad, I think it is a waste of $$, but the people living in the 'mansion' have more $$ than they have sense any way! LOL It's all for show.
Maybe I need to make friends with some landscapers so I could save the plants before they throw them out :))))

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

I've always thought that one could build a business on what people throw out, and plants are no exception. In fact, I know of one person who did a regular business in "used" plants. He would plant a bed of, say, Caladiums, charge for it, then when the customer wanted something new, remove them, but instead of throwing them out, he repotted them and then sold the same Caladiums back to the client, or another client, again the next year! Sweet!

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Susan: Next time the landscapers show up, I'd be taking them home-baked cookies and lemonade! LOL!
