Oh how I miss my delightful Mangosteens

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I don't know why I didn't think of coming over to this forum before now. Is anyone here growing Mangosteen? During my time in Taiwan, I knew them as an imported fruit from Thailand. I posted this thread in Fruits & Nuts, but I've had no nibbles: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/767878/ Oh, to taste that delicious fruit once again.... Woe, O woe is me.

I also stopped by to visit my new BFF, Islandshari. {:~0

Hey wrightie!!! You are over here and now you have to stay. :~p

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Pepster, how are those new boots working out for you? Are they made for walkin'?

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Haven't gotten them yet. Should have them sometime next week if I don't get them tomorrow. I wish I had gotten the leopard ones too. Just for shockers. LOL

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Aloha Wrightie!

I don't have any mangosteins, but they are in my grand scheme of things to come! I understand they are the nectar of the Gods!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Well, somewhere between a peach and who knows what... I hope that with all of the 'hype', you are not let down. All I know is that I was hooked from the very first time I tried them. In those days we just referred to them as 'funky fruit' because we didn't know the Chinese name for them.

I hope you do grow them and find them just as deeelightful!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Yokwe Wrightie!!!!! So very glad you came to visit!! Come on in and sit a spell! We are a great bunch here and just Luuuuuvvvvv company! (No heavy philosophical discussions much here....we save that for d-mails)☺. We just have a lot of fun!

You aren't the first I've heard rave about the mangosteen, but I've never had one....I'll have to be on the lookout.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Heh heh ... So tell me about some of your favorite tropical plants. My house is relatively dark and drafty so I haven't been doing much in the way of "indoor" or tropical plants. I am growing bananas, brug's, jasmine, figs, and several others in containers outdoors, however. Should be interesting to see if I can over-winter them safely.

I'm particularly interested in fragrant tropicals. What are some of your faves?

.... and once you answer these questions, I'm going to switch over to the meaning of life.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I can answer the jasmine since I have one. Was told this morning that you have to give them lots of light and regularly sitck them in the tub and blast the spider mites off.

My favorites so far are jasmine and gardenia. Fragrant and nice foilage.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

"lots of light" ... lol ... best I might be able to do is stick it under a fluorescent light on my seed stand, provided that it behaves itself.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

If I had it my way both of mine would be in the basement to *hibernate*. lol. Don't think that's gonna happen now.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I don't have any plants indoors...the a/c would kill em. As far as outside....lordy...fragrant...plumeria, butterfly ginger, pikake, plumeria, oh...and let us not forget plumeria...orchids, star jasmine. Carol - AlohaHoya is the one to answer that - she has the most glorious ...I can't call it garden....grounds? And Christi and Chrissy and Tropicman....and oh ...everyone here has wonderful, fragrant , beautiful tropical plants...but if you have brugs and jasmine...well there ya go!

Now, as for the meaning of life? Hmmmmm, chocolate!

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Sharri - what do you mean you got a/c! You lucky duck! I have to rely on the trade winds at my house, although our old folk have units in their rooms. We sort of live inside/outside !

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

One of our biggest problems is that most buildings are kept too cold! But these houses are cinder block, and without the a/c it can get to over 100 in a matter of hours! A/C is important here!

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

You mean that there really is an upside to living in a house that is held together with elastic bands? With so many termites we never have to worry about cross breezes - they're a natural!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Jenny, you bad girl, you just made me spill my coffee! LOL!!! Yes! an upside!! None of my windows even open!!!! No, I take it back, I have one small window pane amongst a wall of windows upstairs that opens....I guess that's our fire escape! I would love to be able to feel the breezes - but that is for outside! Lucky you!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Wrightie, here is a link to Tropical Fruits. They were talking about Mangosteens in this thread.

Mangosteen are one of the most delicious tastes in the world!!!!! In the Philippines in March I kept buying them and felt SOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo lucky! Once in Victoria, Canada (there for a race weekend - sailboats) I found some, paid 12$ for 3 of them and the crew thought they were OK. OK? Holy Moly...sure changed my mind about their taste buds!!!

They do grow here and I buy them in season...but still pricey at 10$ per lbs... but...I happen to know a neat lady with a big tree in her backyard.....hmmmmmmm

Queen Victoria said that she would Knight anyone who would bring her a fresh Mangosteen!!!! Fat chance in those days!!!

Carol

Shari...there ARE some hoyas that love the cool and would thrive in your AC!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Those are crazy prices, especially given how small they are. Still, I'd pay it just to have a taste again.

I do hope that they eventually become legal and available on the US Mainland... a girl can dream.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I was looking at the link Pep posted....but I don't think I could get the seeds in time...so...here is my plan. I will buy them just before I get on the plane to come back to Kwaj. 8 or so hours in my knapsack shouldn't hurt, ya think? Carol, you realize of course that this means a visit to the lady with the tree while I am there, ??? Do you really grow Hoyas indoors?? Oh, for the scent? Hmmmmm....

Pepper - thanks for the link, hon!

Hey guys those seeds take 15 years to fruit and you need a boy and a girl......whew I hope you are patient :).....the garden bible says it is possible to air layer some varieties...so maybe you can do that......shop bought trees may be quicker but they need very deep rich soil...and lots of water......so how good did you say they tasted???? ha ha ha....sorry mate

dreeeeeaaaam ..dream.. dream ...dream.. when I want you .....la la la

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I just want the fresh fruit!!!

yum yum yum

Hope you find them then mate :)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Methinks that I will need to move a wee bit closer to you before that will happen, chrissy .... *sigh*

Come down for a holiday then ....:)

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

15 yrs!!!! Oh my! Well, then maybe I will concentrate on something a wee bit more cooperative. ha ha

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Wow, I didn't know that mangosteen can be that expensive here in the U.S. I used to live in Indonesia and moved to the U.S about 6 months ago. I used to eat lots of mangosteen, it was really cheap there, more of the fruit that poor people eat. But I like it a lot !!! I start to miss it now that some people mention it :P~

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

That was my experience as well, Seraphine. Ugh.

Well you are lucky....I have never had one at all ....like most folks....what did they taste like? after all of this I am really curious :)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I kinda sorta would relate them kinda sorta to a peach, but... not.

Plant peaches and use your imagination ....ha ha ha ....oh but really don't we all want what we can't have? I guess I don't miss what I haven't had.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Matter of fact, I planted a peach tree just a few days ago. But it shall never compare to the strange but delicious little mangosteen. lol

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I'm so curious to try one! I have been looking at the shipping costs for a rooted tree....ha! Oh well, guess that will have to wait for another time and place. Carol - you should grow your own!!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Now I am wondering what they taste like. lol.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Went to our favorite peach orchard today with my mouth watering before we even got there.

Sign:

Open from June 15 til Aug. 15.....see you next year.

I can still taste them. Have no idea what a magosteen is, looks like, but someone says tastes like a peach....can't be bad.Shari, if it didn'take so long to get to you, I would promise shipping next year but they would be fermented by the time you got them. You will just have to be here (my house) while they are in season....

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

wrightie, I don't understand. I must have said something wrong..I'm sorry.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

The sign. Pulling up and finding the place CLOSED for the season. That's Terrible! lol

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep. It was. We should have known that peaches are out of season here by now. Whenever we want something....just think.....Ok, I want it.......go get it.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

A month on my little rock would cure that ya know. Want it? Guaranteed it's not here!
