CLOSED: What kind of spider is this??

Chicago, IL

It is so big I was considering throwing a live mouse into its web for a little breakfast! I am totally arachnophobic and this was not a good start to my morning!! Can you tell my what kind it is and if it is dangerous??

Looks like one of the Garden or Writing Spiders. Called Writing Spider because of that typical, usually vertical, zig-zag structure in the webs.

Its genus is Argiope.

You've got an Argiope aurantia...Writing Spider or Scribbler. Totally harmless and a good 'garden friend'

I have the same fears as you...but have learned to let these gals hang out in my garden...(they're gals, not guys)

If they are in the way of a path, break the side of the web that you want them to move...and they will reposition it after a couple of times...they're quick learners.

Here's the BugFiles link...lots of folks have these
