CLOSED: Interesting wasp

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Found this wasp in my greenhouse. It's dead but I didn't do it...promise.~~~~$;>}#)

Could it be a solitary bee? It doesn't quite look like a wasp to me, a better close up would help but they can be difficult. The red mark on the abdomen might help to ID it.

I think I tossed it into the compost bucket.

I think this is a male 'Cow killer' Velvet Ant, genus Dasymutilla The males have wings. Ants and wasps are in the same order, Hymenoptera.

I thought it might be a velvet ant too but the ab. looks more elongated than a velvet ant.

I agree, this is definitely a male Cow Killer Velvet Ant/Bee (see attached). We have a lot of the wingless female Cow Killer's here and I don't wish to be stung by one of these females!

Yup,that does look more like the fellow I found in the greenhouse. I'll marked this solved.
