Chickadee Question for Everyone

Marlton, NJ

adel, are you sure it was a No Melt and not an "All Season" suet? All season suets will melt.

The no melts do not melt in Florida to my knowledge and it gets plenty hot and humid there.

We had a 100 degree day here w/ plenty of humidity and I didn't notice any problems. :-)

I just read that last thread Pelletory, and that was very interesting, as these things are all new to me, I shall try to get some of this no melt stuff and see what effect it has. Also I have started getting doves or pigeons, and when they come it keeps the others away. They all sit on the fence waiting theirs turn, so I put out smaller feeders so the pigeons or doves cannot sit on them.

pixie62560, I have one of those thistles I thought they were called Russian Thistles (I was WRONG). The one pictured is called a Bull Thistle...aka...Cirsium vulgare. I also have Canadian Thistles but they're smaller and easier to pull out of the ground. This one is along my fence line. Why is it that so many weeds and trees we dislike are called Russian, Siberian, Mongolian; etc. My neighbor was alarmed at seeing mine. And ... mine too is about 5 ft tall but I've never considered the birds eating it. I read a sweet story about an old lady who would visit her gardening friends and donate a few seeds to each ..... I thought it was from Paghat's Garden website who lives over in Bremerton but I can't find it on her site. We get Chickadees here in the cold months. And by the feel of things this morning .... there ought to be some here now perched on the feeder .............brrrrrrrrrrrr. Yesterday we had 83 degrees and this morning maybe 40.

pelletory. It was advertised as a no melt. I was going to get the brand name etc. from the second cake I had stored on the front porch but some animal (probably a fox) has carted it off.

Do you mind me asking where you bought it adel?

Hello,
I have a tube thistle feeder with the holes under the perches so only the goldfinches can use it. Housefinches are unable to fugure it out. However, the chickadees have adapted very nicely. They hang on the perches upside down and eat to their heart's content. I have seen this happen many times.

Hi mkdon! I'm so glad to hear that (about the chickadees). I've still never seen one at my thistle feeders. That would be nice if I could get them on there because they would be much closer for photographing. Pelle
