Mama Blacktail has a new brood!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Iwish I had gotten the first photo of how I found it coming out of the Shell . It had its wing in its mouth and boy was it mad! I had to move the wing and then it started kicking that Shell off! I called it a "Silly Goose" so I guess its name will be Either Goose or Gander.

I Can already see the White high lights in its Feathers. So I know it is definitely a little Gray Japanese like its mama and papa!

Here it is sitting on its legs for the First time! I will wait until it is good and dry and then take it out to its real Mama who is setting on its brothers and sisters right now !
I have to go to work at 11:30 this morning, which will be very hard to do! I cant wait to get home and find out how many new babies will be under " Goosey's" Mama!

Awwwwwww It's so precious. Got some good sized feet for a little fella. I can't wait to see him (or her) all dried and fluffy. Please take more pictures of Goosey and family. If I lived out in the country, I'd have some chickens and little goats. Luv em all. SheVerne

I can't wait to see him/her dry either!!! They are soooooo cute at this stage!!!!! (frown) I want to see more baby pics :(................................

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Well Im home now and figured I had better go out to the barn and check on things!!! Such Work! I really hate to go out there ..... Yeah right!!!!!! I was so excited about checking on the babies I ran right across the turkeys feed dish and knocked it over and then stepped into his waterer!!! Geeesh what a clutz!!!!

First heres a look at "Goosey", just before I put him in with his Mama this morning before work. He hadnt dried as much as I wanted but I figured as active as he already was I better go ahead and Sneak him back in the nest!

This afternoon Mama wasnt cooperating one bit with my taking a peek at the babies! They had already settled in for the night and I had to run back into the house to get the camera!
I know I saw 4 tiny heads but when I got back to the barn they wouldnt come back out to see me! Since Mama still has a couple more eggies to hatch , I didnt want to disturb her to much!

Just as I decided to leave them alone , this little one ran out from under Mama and said hello! It was very curious to see what all the racket was about. It gave me the look as if to say, " Do you really think you sound like my Mama , making all that weird Chirping Noise?" so If I can tell ,Tomorrow, Which is which , I think that this little one will be named, George , for curious George.

Aaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwww gotta love the chickie pics !!

I've got a banty favorelle pullet that has gone broody... she's trying to hatch golf balls at the moment.. How she managed to collect golf balls and carry the extras into her box is beyond me. There is a pretty big lip at the next edge... guess where theres a will theres a way huh.

She's only been laying for a month maybe so I was surprised she decided to go broody already. I of course was taking her eggs daily. I am trying NOT to discourage her so come spring she will hopefully be in the mood again.......therefore she gets to keep the golf balls.

With winter so near I don't want chicks right now. Poor thing goes NUTZ when anybody gets within a foot of her box !! I've been calling her Sybil...lol

Is that a homemade incubator that I saw in one of those pictures?

Monroe, GA

OH I LOVE THE BABIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are all sooooo pretty!!! I can't wait to have some little ones of my own running around. The little white hen of mine never sat on the 1 egg she had left so I pulled it. I guess I will try again next spring :(.................I was sooooo hoping she would have sat............

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Hey all! the incu ,Mccamden, is one of the tiny little 4egg gers that I bought from a poultry company. It never held a constant heat or moisture , so I sat it inside a flower Cloche or miniature Green house, ( like you would put African Violets in).

That is ingenious! I always wondered if those little ones worked. A friend of mine said that as a kid they used to put a 60 watt lightbulb in a box, and somehow they were able to maintaine a constant temperatue. Has anyone ever heard of doing this? Those incubators can get pretty expencive, and I want to try a hand at hatching a couple next spring.

Northern Michigan, MI(Zone 5a)

I made one using a styrofoam cooler and light bulb and I did another using a bulb with a styrofoam top over an aquarium. I hatched ducks in the aquarium version.

If your room temp is consistent it goes a LONG way in helping the homemade incubator keep it's temp etc...

Go back thru the threads from last winter/early spring we had some postings about building your own bator.
