Show me your fall blooms

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I have grown to love yellow. I finally have goldenrod blooming!

Wow! Anna, goldenrod already!!! mine is not even close. I love goldenrod too, very pretty.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

These are not normally considered fall flowers, but they are blooming now.
Halberd Leaved Swamp Mallow. Hibiscus militaris.

That hibiscus is a beauty. I love the form and clean "color".
This year, some of my summer bloomers, like Salvia Greggi are only starting now. That is a dwarf goldenrod. Not sure if that makes a difference with the bloom time.

I found this at my work. What is it? I'm thinking it's a perrinial. Note the brown semi-woody stem just above the bloom.

I found these same plants out at mom and dad's place over the weekend. I am also wondering what they are.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

I found only one plant, can't find any others around. It's putting on more blooms, and should be covered in them by Monday, depending on how long each flower lasts. I like the pink pok-a-dots in the throat. Josephine, do you know what it is?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It is Purple Gerardia and it is an annual, shame isin't it?

It is very pretty and it is a larval host for the Buckeye butterfly.
Josephine.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Shall I attempt seed collection? Anyone want any if i can get some?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Sure, the seed is very very fine, almost like powder.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Smaller than the Winged Loosestrife seeds? Will they be in a pod?

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Another fall bloom here. What is this one? It looks like some kind of mallow.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, they will be in a pod, about the same as Loosestrife.
The second picture is a mallow, but I will have to investigate which one.
Josephine.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I think the Mallow is this one, but not totally sure.

Josephine.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

That's not it Josephine. The foliage is different as well as the height. These have rounded tips on each leaf and the Indian Mallow has pointed tips. Also, the DG profile for Indian Mallow says they can reach 4ft. The ones here are more like a ground cover. I was thinking some kind of Globe Mallow? I'll keep looking. Thanks!

I believe this is the one! Note what Hazel says about it growing in gravely flats.....that's where these are growing!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

That is great that you found it, you are turning into a good plant detective, congratulations!!! I wouldn't mind some of that for a hanging basket, if you can transplant it.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

That shouldn't be a problem if the tap root is not too deep. I'll give it a go. Thanks for all your help Josephine! I don't know where I'd be without you! Probably still trying to figure out what this purple flower is (Winged Loosestrife). Ha Ha!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

You have found some lovely natives.
Here is the Frostweed you gave me, Josephine.

Wow! really neat, it has grown very well for you, thank you for showing it.

I love different kinds of Mallows. This is my orange globe mallow that bloomed so prettily this Spring. :)

Outstanding TxTurq! The mallows are a beautiful group of flowers!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I love your mallow too.
I also love the queen of fall blooming salvias, Mexican Bush Sage.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

That is so pretty.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I also have the Mexican Bush Sage and look forward to it's blooms every fall.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow! Bananna, can that be propagated from cuttings?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Mine is showing off as well....and has gotten so large that my smaller bird of paradise (texas) is beginning to get lost inside it, lol

Here is a fall bloom that came up on it's own in one of my rooting pots. There's a whole lot of little cats on it. can you see them? I'll post a close up of them.

Thumbnail by broncbuster
Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Anyone know what kind they are? They've almost devoured the whole plant!!

Thumbnail by broncbuster

Bronc, i have the Mexican Bush Sage on my RU list, if you like some let me know. they are very easy from cuttings. I'm not sure about other zones, they are an annual here.(7B)

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

I'd love to have some, Cocoa! It says it's hardy to zone 8a. Isn't it strange how you are in zone 7b but 30 miles to your east or west is zone 8a?

We are close to the Sabine River. I think if forms a sort of depression for cold air to sink down into. I'll put you down for the Bush Sage.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Cocoa!

No problem. It's an impressive plant in the Fall. It's much bigger than it appears in Banana's photo, as an annual it grows to 5'x6', so give it lots of room.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

It is a perennial in my garden and I may have to move it.....getting way to big and shading other things I don't want to loose.....or I guess I could move them....

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Mine has really gotten large as well.....MUCH larger then I thought. But those purple blooms are so showy and pretty up against my drab fence. :)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Bronc, the catterpilars are Bordered Patch butterflies, Take some in and raise them before the birds get them all, they are small, but very beautiful, here is one from the group that I raised. I bet your little girl would love it.

OK, I will! Thanks, Josephine!
