Empathetic squirrels?

Federal Way, WA

Well.
One day, after all her effort, my dog caught a squirrel.
Except she crushed its insides and killed it.
I sat with the squirrel and watched it die.
I cried.
I believe that the other squirrels saw me and they just KNEW.
I never got along with squirrels before that day.
And now, squirrels come near me.
They look at me for long periods of time.
They just KNOW that I have compassion for their kind, and they're cool with me.
Is this crazy?

I once came across a stunned squirrel that perhaps had received a jolt from a power line. Anyway, it just layed there motionless for sometime. I carefully moved it to a more secluded area so that my dogs wouldn't bother it. Suddenly, it just got up & ran away.

I seem to connect more with the birds. Esp. the robins. I throw them worms.

Hi iEnjoySquirrels,

I'm very sorry that the squirrel died. I would've felt terrible and cried, too. ;( I like the squirrels, even though a lot of people find them annoying. I always brake for them and have almost been rear-ended a few times because of it! (I need to get a bumper sticker that says, "I brake for squirrels," to warn people, lol!) The squirrels that are being nice to you probably saw that you tried to help the one your dog got. Or, they just might sense it. I think animals can sense our feelings pretty easily.

I had something kinda similar happen to me, a few weeks ago. I've been feeding the birds a lot this summer - much more than in the past. And, usually, when you step off the porch, they fly away. Well, one day, they just all stayed there - like they knew I wasn't going to hurt them cause I was the "food lady," lol. It seemed really weird, though, to be able to get within a couple of feet of the birds (even a cardinal) without them being worried! Kinda spooky, actually, lol. But, I'm glad they aren't afraid of me anymore.

Keep enjoying nature and welcome to Dave's Garden!

I agree with Kristy. Animals do have a 6th sense. Even dogs instinctively know the people who like dogs & those that fear them.

I feed hummers, song birds and, consequently, squirrels (they share with the song birds). It's amazing how they get to know you're the "food lady." At first when I went out to replenish their seed, the birds all flew completely away. Now they just fly into nearby trees and come back as I'm stepping up onto my front porch (about 20 yards from their feeding area). The squirrels just climb up into a nearby tree and wait for me to leave too. And the hummers just crack me up. When I come get their empty feeders, they just go sit in the trees right in front of my porch until I come back. Then they all (2 to 3 dozen) swarm around me until I can get the feeder hung back up. They aren't at all afraid of me. They are fascinating to watch. We have deer that come feed in the food plot we plant for them down by the creek and they don't mind at all when hubby, me and the dogs sit on the porch to watch them in the evening.

My bird feeders went empty 2 days ago and I didn't have any more feed. Yesterday, my daughter and I were sitting on the porch and one of the chickadees was going on and on, more than usual. He/she had an angry tone, it seemed, and it came right up into the plum tree by the porch and gave me the worst scolding I'd ever gotten from a bird then flew off. I've got to get those feeders filled up!

We don't have ours out yet. We only have them out in the fall and winter when the food isn't readily avaliable in the wild.
