Odd thingy - wild cherry tree

Mooresville, NC(Zone 7b)

I posted this on the butterfly forum thinking it could be related but no bites. Maybe someone here can tell me what these are? They are all over our wild cherry tree. Tree seems to be very healthy. We have a large red-spotted purple butterfly colony and the caterpillars eat the tree. So I was thinking these thingys had something to do with that. Anybody have any ideas?

A gall, probably caused by an eriophyid gall mite.
