My sister in Nebraska has what we think is a Cutleaf Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina 'Laciniata') - recently identified here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/765848/
She says it sends out these underground shoots that show up in the yard nearby. You can't pull them up without messing up the ground because they are connected by a strong underground stem that leads back to the tree. What is the best way to keep this tree under control? It is a really beautiful tree but a real pain in the neck!
Trouble with aggressive sumac tree!
A mower.
Resin
If you mow around it you should be able to keep the sprouts down easily. I control an overly aggressive wisteria that way.
