Mexican Sunflowers

Where are the seeds to Mexican sunflowers?(Tithonion) sp
I just see dried up flowers, but not seeds. Has anyone ever seen this seeds?

Don't know anything about those, but just wondering if maybe the birds could have gotten them?

I gathered my first Mexican Sunflower seeds today. One of the seed heads was brown on the stem so I cut it off. I came inside and dug down in the spent blossom and found the seeds.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the info, I appreciate it.

here's how to collect 'em ... first, make sure you have a nice wide catching surface to work over then, with your non-dominant hand gloved, crush the bejeezus out of the dried flowerhead. the flowerheads will soften immediately with a good crushin' and bits and pieces will fly downward. those tiny dark bits that resemble arrowheads (or maybe a mouse cursor works better for you) - - them's your seeds.

now the seeds are also sneaky - - more than what fall from the crushed flowerhead will still be hiding. give all those light-coloured elongated bits a workout by rubbing them, pinch by pinch, between your hands. more of those little suckers will cascade onto your work surface.

for good measure, i also cut the ruins of the flowerhead in two with scissors and re-crush the halves to ferret out stragglers.

btw, i offer these seeds for trade. please see my trading list. ~ ATBTY ! ~ ŁazŁo

I have Tithonia rotundifolia (Mexican Sunflower) seeds piling up like crazy this autumn. I've posted an offer in the Seed Trading forum:

The photo isn't mine. It is my most favourite picture of the blossom of this plant.

Lazlo....that is a beautiful picture!!

Horshoe told me that when the blooms start to drop their petals I could dead head the rest and leave them to dry out....then save the seeds.

I do Zinnias this way also. Jo
