David Liddle hoyas

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Hi Tammy, I am with you about another order. There are a couple that I wanted, but didn't order this round and should have. I like those reddish leaves. Looking at the pictures gives us more to be tempted with. I did my catching up and read all about those little piggies so I won't feel too bad ; )

Prescott, AZ

Oh Sara and Teresa, I like how you think !!! If were not careful we may just exhaust poor David.

Carnegie, PA

What did you guys do with the long bare vines? I tried to wrap them around the pot and pin them to the soil, so nothing went to waste lol. Ok, so here we go.

This is H. heuschkeliana (pink flowers)

Edited to add: I forgot to add how nice everyone's cuttings are!

This one has quite a few peduncles on it. Hope I don't have to wait too long to see those cute little blooms.

Gabi, like yours, this one has a leaf bigger than my hand! It was wound up in a tight circle like this when I got it out of the box. I couldn't believe the length of this cutting when I unraveled the whole thing. I think I cut it about 5 times.

and finally - H. erythrina

I love the redness and veination on these leaves.

Hi Sara!

Mine arrived and they look great! Van also confirmed safe arrival.

Thanks so much for the fast turn around! That was really impressive :D

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Ki, thank you for letting me know that Van got his....I was looking for his email, and was just wondering about yours this morning too. I will check both off my list. Hope that they all grow wonderfully for you!!

I did a water change this morning, and Eddie has roots on magnifica, and purpureo-fusca, and I have found some on several of my NOID's. Not long ones, of course, but fresh, thick, white new roots, so no complaints here.

Jen, your cuttings look pretty good!! I wouldn't worry too much about the Tanna Island, I have managed to root worse. You might soak that one a little longer, or try rooting in water or pearlite. I am not a huge fan of soil rooting, as I can't keep an eye on what is going on. With the water, I can see if the stem is rotting, and easily re-cut if necessary, with out disturbing the roots that are forming...

S

Long Beach, CA

Ah...maybe that is why I never had good success with water rooting. I never knew when I should change the water, or what to look for (as far as rot) and I never cut anything off. I would see some roots sometimes, but mostly the stem would just rot around them and eventually the whole thing was mush.

Hey Sara - I'm in Louisiana visiting my daughter and family, and just got word from my sis that the package and cuttings arrived safely. But, we did order cuttings of lauterbachii that were not in the box. Haven't gotten the invoice from David, though, so maybe he just ran out....I'll post pics when I get home.
THANKS so much for all your hard work and very quick turnaround!!!!

Karen,

Good to hear that they made it. I did not look in anyone's bag, but please be sure to ask David Liddle about it. Dmichael said that he did not get the vitellina he ordered, AND his box was popped wide open!! Yikes!! He did say all the cuttings looked good though.

Aberdeen, NC

Thank you Sara for all the hard work you put into this fete. I received mine this afternoon and haven't even looked at them. I have them soaking and will be organizing them tonight. I can't wait to see what I actually have. Enjoy this nice long weekend. The hoyas couldn't have reached here at a better time.
Karen

San Francisco, CA

Thanks for all your work, Sara!
Unfortunately, thanks to the USPS, my box is lost. I went to the P.O. to pick it up today and it wasn't there, no one had a clue where it might be, and every coconut-head I talked to all day long felt like it was someone else's responsibility. After half a dozen phone calls and two trips to the P.O., a friendly passing mailman told me to check with the central office, where misplaced packages often end up. Unfortunately, that was at 3:50pm, 10 minutes before closing, and the main office is downtown.
So, since we have a three day weekend, I won't be seeing that box until Tuesday at the earliest, granted that the box isn't still lost then.
While I'll never say never, there were some rather delicate cuttings in this order, and after being in transit for so long and sitting in a probably not-airconditioned truck or warehouse for three more days, I'm expecting a total loss. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.
Oh well, that is the luck of the draw, and I've had very good luck with plant shipments up to this point, so I'll just have a bigger order next time!

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh, Mark I am so sorry to hear this!!! USPS sucks sometimes! Ann Wayman's box was lost for close to 2 weeks on the last order, but she was able to save every single one of them, so there is hope!!!!
Ann

San Francisco, CA

2 weeks- no kidding! I'll hold out hope. My last package from David Liddle came also during adverse weather, and a few cuttings were lost. I have H. lanceolata in this one, and H. multiflora, who I think might be lost, but some, like H. lambii may make it.
Fingers crossed!

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Yeah, I think the multiflora is surely lost. Is the lanceolata a really thin stemmed/leaved one as well?

San Francisco, CA

'tis!

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Mark, did it come yesterday, and then go back to the PO because you were working? I guess when you said it came, I thought that maybe they just left you the green card saying you could come and pick it up........Cripes, I am really sorry.

I was pretty concerned about that same thing, so I spent a while working things out with my carrier to be sure that it wouldn't go back to the post office, and it did actually require a signature, so I filled out a post office power of atty. giving her permission to sign......

My first order in fall of 06 was in transit for over 2 weeks, and we did have some thin stemmed hoyas do ok - I will definitely send positive thoughts your way!!

S

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

We're all rooting (no pun intended) for your hoyas, Mark!

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Mark,

Just curious did you find the missing box yet? I really hope that you have it, and the cuttings look none the worse for it.

Doug

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Doug, great minds DO think alike!! I was wondering about Mark's box yesterday. Everyone else had theirs on Friday or on Saturday, so Mark's is the only one not accounted for.

S

San Francisco, CA

No, sadly my box is officially missing, which is a nicer way of saying that no one at USPS SF knows what they are doing, and none of them are willing to help. I've been to the P.O. four times and have had half-a-dozen phone conversations with various coconut heads on the PS totem pole, all to no result and with no response from any of them after they hang up the phone.
This happened to Annie W. last year, and her box did turn up two weeks later. I hope mine does too, but SF is having a heat wave, and I don't have high hopes.
Maybe we should consider alternatives next year- FedEx is more expensive, but they do almost always come through, and can track packages. Or maybe a better (more expensive) shipping choice through USPS, perhaps with insurance? As I understand it now, the USPS is entitled to lose any uninsured package of any size or worth they care to and they have no obligation for it.
Must be nice!
Seriously though, I've had good luck up 'til now, and so even if this is a total loss I am trying not to make a big deal out of it. I can certainly find the cutting of most of those plants elsewhere, and will be even more glad to get them after having to wait!
M

Silex, MO(Zone 5b)

Which cuttings did you order? I'd certainly be willing to share some of my longer cuttings with you. :)
Becky

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Mark,
So sorry to hear that. I would be so upset. Glad you're handling this well. Do you need Multiflora still? I'm not sure if I have Multiflora or Javanica, but I think it might be Javanica. I would be more than happy to send a cutting to you. Let me know either through here or through Dmail.

As far as shipping methods are concerned, the problem with FedEx is that the package has to be signed for. I, for one, wouldn't be home during regular business hours to sign for the package. What about insuring the USPS packages? That would probably be just as expensive (or most likely LESS expensive than using FedEx). Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. If FedEx ends up being the carrier of choice, I'd probably be better off since I wouldn't be able to order cuttings!! I have no more room!

Still hoping that you get your package, Mark.

Gabi

San Francisco, CA

Thanks, that's really sweet! Let's give it a few more days and see what happens.

Yes, if the box doesn't show, let us know what you ordered.

There are additional issues with insurance - the fine print. The specific exclusions should be checked carefully. Are perishables covered? Plant material? Is 2" of packing required even if the claim is for lost packages (and not damage)? What proof of value must be provided to collect? Etc. I've pretty much given up on insurance, except for new consumer goods. Just my take.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I'm with keyring, let us know what you ordered and i'm willing to share anything that I have that was on your list. I know I have a HUGE multiflora.

We, on other forums, send priority mail every day with plants in them and a tracking number or confirmation number. When a package didn't come to me on time, I simply went to the Post office and , within 5 minutes, they told it had gone to Atlanta twice from Dallas, was in Wisconsin at the time......................they directed the package to me in two days...............it costs 1.50 to get a tracking number. If you do you own shipping from home on the internet, you don't even have to pay for the confirmation number to track it down easily.................

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Mark - I'd be happy to send cuttings, also!

Karen

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Gaby...there is no requirement for the FedEx box to be signed for if the shipper makes a note to that effect, or FEDEX is called with the release OR you leave a note on your door. They ARE pricey without a discount...USPS seems to pay more attention to packages IF they are insured or with a delivery confirmation required...but I wouldn't want to experience the headaches of trying to collect insurance on the contents if they are plants. I think they have a way around it...

Mark, count me in to help you replace anything you don't receive (that sounds funny).

carol

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Gessiegail, I dont know what kind of tracking numbers you're getting for priority mail . I was told by the people at my post office that you can not get tracking numbers for priority mail you only get a delivery confirmation number.

But with delivery confirmation numbers all that you will ever see is where and what time it was dropped off and possibly when it was delivered. You can not track a package with a delivery confirmation number and most of the time the system never gets updated.

I am right now at this moment looking at a delivery confirmation number for a package that I sent to another forum member 2 days ago and all it is still showing is that I dropped it off at my post office and at what time. The US postal service SUCKS A BIG FAT ONE when it comes to tracking packages. And if you call and hassle them about it,even if they are holding your package in their hands at that very moment they'll toss it aside and let it sit for a few more days that's how those postal idiots operate.

Ever noticed that you can mail a box and not put any kind of message on it and it will arrive in perfect shape. But just as soon as you put on there please do not crush or fragile how does your box arrive??? Crushed or damaged in some sort of way about 85% of the time and I think they do it on purpose simply because you asked them to be carefull with your goods.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Tell the post office you had or have plants in a box and you may as well be talking on deaf ears. My post office wont even ship plants if I tell them that's whats in the box so I lie every time I go in there with a box of plants in my hands. Oh it's a box full of hand crocheted snowflakes that grandma made, going to Mrs. Carol in Hawaii!!!! Wham!! Bam Thank ya mam!! The box is on its way!!!!

The first and only time I made the mistake of telling a postal worker that i had plants in a box he threw this book in front of me that must have been 16 inches thick and then the questions started. What is it ,where's it going and so on so from that day on when I mail plants I make it my business to not let them know what i'm mailing.

So i'm with Carol on this one I wouldnt even ask about insurance or recovering money. There's enough of us here that are more than willing to help replace whatever was lost in the box if we have it to offer.

Aberdeen, NC

Delivery confirmation doesn't mean a whole lot. One of my plant orders was delivered to the wrong house. My neighbor brought the box over the following day. All the delivery confirmation did was show that it was delivered somewhere but not the intended destination. I have also been told that plants aren't insureable. For the wages that postal workers get, you would think they could at least do their job without losing things or destroying boxes. I have mailed boxes clearly marked which end is up and the postal worker automatically puts it upside down..
I hope your box makes it to you. If not, I will also share cuttings of any of the hoyas that I might have.

LOL. I once labeled a Priority Mail box this way up, and it went by truck across country. Took 7 days. But it arrived the right way up :P

San Francisco, CA

Wow, thanks everyone! I didn't mention before, but I had about $90 of cuttings in that box. Egads.
David, I have to say I was rolling after your angry missives, you said it very well. The USPS leaves a lot to be desired, and most of them obviously don't care at all and just want you OUT of their window. I did run into a really funny mail carrier at the post-office. I was standing outside looking dejected after my third visit and he rolled up in a big truck. I asked him if he was dropping off packages, and he said no, but listened to my problem and gave me some numbers to call and a plan to start looking for the package. When I told him no one inside had been willing even to do that, he laughed and said "This is the POST OFFICE! They wouldn't even do that for ME!" and then gave a great big laugh. He was so funny about it, I had to laugh too.
The multiflora I ordered was the speckled leaf one, that David thinks is the real multiflora, wheras most of us have javanica. It seems to be really fussy (it is more thin leaved than javanica), and has died in transit for me before.
Some of the cuttings I can do without, they were things I wanted to see and compare to existing plants to see if I had them labeled correctly.
I was looking forward to a few- the large leaved clone of lambii and H. lanceolata. I'm sure multiflora and lanceolata have kicked the bucket by now, but there is still hope for the others!
What does everyone think about express mail? it is more expensive (about $20 rather than $10), but is guaranteed 1-2 days and has a tracking number and automatic insurance of up to $100. It does seem like extortion, having to pay an outfit more money to insure that they will do the job you are already paying them to do, but I don't think I will risk priority mail again with valuable packages.

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Mark, I'm in too ... If I've got it, a cutting is yours.
A

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Mark, I tracked your package, and here is what I got:

" Label/Receipt Number: 0306 2400 0001 4875 7607
Status: Notice Left

We attempted to deliver your item at 2:27 PM on August 31, 2007 in SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94117 and a notice was left. It can be redelivered or picked up at the Post Office. If the item is unclaimed, it will be returned to the sender. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later."

I will be checking my mail too, in the event that it is returned to me. I don't know how long they will keep it, but if it comes back, I will do my best to salvage what you have.

My first David Liddle was in transit over 15 days, then another 4 to get to me, and I only lost a few.
