What goes with Azaleas

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I love and have azaleas, but when I plant them in a border, I like to plant two or 3 of them, then a couple of something else, then more azaleas. Can anyone give me an idea about the "other. What would you plant. I live in Zone 8, so Azaleas do well. They have the Azalea Trails in Tyler, not too far from me. Beautiful if any of you go through Texas that time of year.

they also grow roses in Tyler, so stop and pick up a few to plant with your azaleas.

Ewww yuk I hate pines.

I vote roses. Other options: chinese fringe flower (loropetalum), variegated privet, bridal wreath. Those are some of my most favorite, and they would provide a contrasting color of foliage.

Hey we must be neighbors! Nice to meet you!!!!

i had to take a second look there. thought you were lorraine answering your own question. ha! lol!

I don't know your sun conditions and have never gardened in your zone, but here in NJ (6B), I would mix in rhodos, mountain laurels, andromeda, leucothoe, cherry laurel, acuba and maybe some low growing russian cypress with azaleas. I also like to throw in a hydrangea or 2 in front and in between the evergreens. The hydrangeas enjoy the same light conditions and give you a fluffy color blast in the summer when the others are looking kind of blandly background green. In my experience, roses like way more sun than azaleas so I don't think they would thrive together.

Hi, Garden harber. I live right out of Gilmer off 155. So, you know what grows around here and how hot it is. Will the roses grow where they don't get total sunshine, or should I just make a bed where it's sunny all the time and put the bulbs there too

Shame on you!

Best trees in the world!

I like pines too, but have a yard full of them, along with oak. We had so many on 15 acres we had to have a company come in and cut a lot of them down. We didn't cut any of the tall and old ones, but any 8inches or under had to go. If we hadn't, we would never see the sun

I really hate seweet gum trees. Have them too.

I agree with Resin, pines and azaleas are a match made in heaven. I think oakleaf hydrangeas, beautyberries, camellias, hollies, tea olives, and fatsia blend well with azaleas. Maybe even some of the low growing palms, like Louisiana palmetto and needle palm. Everything I mentioned does well in filtered shade.

Being near Mobile, I have to brag that we have the best azalea display. LOL

The "Pride of Mobile" azalea is probably the most commonly planted one in my area.

Lorraine I think that if the roses get at least 1/2 day sun they will be happy.
Also there are some azaleas that are supposed to tolerate more sun but I don't know if it is true.

Top 6 reasons to hate pine trees:

Sap drips all over vehicles and such in 100 degree daily heat.
Preferred habitat for red wasps nests.
Preferred habitat for scorpions.
Snap in two with strong wind or ice or both, especially brittle in winter.
Nothing grows well under them because they are so darn thirsty and the fallen pine needles choke the life out of everything that tries.
Preferred habitat for copperhead snakes.

Around here, if you want to find a copperhead snake or scorpions, just go poking around underneath a pine tree.

I hate sweet gum trees too....you can't even burn the firewood of pines or sweetgums in the fireplace due to the gum sap. Worthless.
