Purpleleaf Plum Tree

Hull,Ga, GA(Zone 8a)

Hi everyone,
I have a purpleleaf plum tree on the west side of my house. Its about a 11/2 old, and as you can see from the pic, it really hasn't done too good. I thought it was a fast growing tree. Any suggestions? Thanks, Cathryn

It can take trees a year or two to settle in and get their roots going before they really take off and start growing a lot on the top. Your picture is from too far away to tell, but is there anything wrong with the tree that makes you think it's unhealthy, or are you just concerned about the lack of growth?

Hi ecrane3,
Nothing wrong with the tree, just slow I guess. Thanks for the info.......Cathryn

how tall was it when you planted it? if it was a seedling it has grown pretty fast.

OK.....here is what Grandma told me about gardening....

The first year it sleeps
The second year it creeps
The third year it leaps

And it is generally a good rule of thumb for all perennials and trees/bushes. If after the fourth year it is not doing what you want, move it. But my experience is that this is a fast growing tree. It takes a bit to establish but give it a few years and the colour alone makes it worth the wait. Not to mention the few weeks of nice pink blossoms. It is not a real tall tree but it will be lovely. Just hurry up and wait!!!!

;) Susan
