Ann, just re-read this thread and saw your post regarding cranberry containers. Are they clear/opaque plastic? If so, and you can cut them nearly in half, leaving a bit of a hinge, then they should work.
I even used really large salad containers. They were good for things like Alyssum that didn't need much headroom.
Lovely LUCKY Lavatera !!!
They are almost 2 litres and clear plastic. I've started setting them aside.
Should be good. I tried a smaller milk jug that was the same size as your cranberry bottle. Worked fine. Might want to put less seeds in maybe. I used the 2 litre milk jug for Teddy bear sunflowers. I put 9 seeds in it, 3 rows of 3. Only 3 seeds germinated, but that was a good thing, there wasn't room for any more seedlings!

This 'winter sowing' is really interesting me.
How nice NOT to have to go to a Greenhouse and pay outrageous amounts of money for something that is .. well .. recyclable ..
I do have a couple of the large plastic salad containers as well .. i always KNEW they'd come in handy :-)

My experience with wintersowing is that I much prefer the gallon milk jugs to any other container. I have 52 students who can save them for me but I could also get the Calgary Philharmonic on board if anybody here wants them...(my husband is a full time violinist.)
As for lavatera, I highly recommend Lavatera Trimestis Twins Hot Pink from T and M seeds--- they far surpassed the Siver Cup or anything else I grew in the past. The color is spectacular!

Thanks for the offer, but getting them to Ontario might prove a challenge. LOL
As far as the lavatera, does a second generation come true from the seeds - as nice as the first, or is it too early to tell?
Ann
Hi Ann. I've been growing lavatera from my own seed for a few years now, and from my own experience they always come true and beautiful for me. I grow both Silver Cup (original seed was commercial) and Ruby Regis (original seed was from echoes).

Ginny - I've had similar luck with the Silver Cup and I grew some white Lavatera from bought seed - have no idea what variety. Of course they have hybridized and now I will get either white or pink, but they look pretty close to the originals.Haven't bought Lavatera seed for years. But haven't harvested any seed yet this year either. Must do that.
Ann
Thanks for posting the information on the Lavatera seeds ladies. I was picking the seed heads off my Silver Cup Lavatera this past weekend and wondering if it was worth keeping. Now I know it is. Ü
Joanne
Oops - sorry Ann. I realize now you were posing the question specifically about the Twins Hot Pink rather than Lavatera in general. I'm glad the info helped you out though Joanne :-)

No problem, Ginny.
I've now harvested seed. Far more than I will need and there will be more to come. So far it has come from PINK flowers, but that doesn't mean the plants will have pink flowers. Still, I try to keep the seed separate as to which colour it came from.
MarilynneS - I promised you some seed above. Would you like some? If so, Dmail me your mailing address and I'll send some out.
Ann
