I would like input from anyone who has propagated hibiscus from cuttings. What method(s) have you tried and have worked for you? Water? Rooting hormone? I want to propagate and am having trouble. Thanks for your help!
Propagating Hibiscus cuttings
LOL Garden. Look 10 posts down. You can't ask for much more advice then 200 reponses. :D
I've taken cuttings from my Hibs in the fall and kept them in my green houses over the winter. In the spring i just take them out and keep them all together in semi shade and they continue to do well. Generally I cut some of the new growth (the softer green part) and stick the cut end in rooting hormone and stick it in a pot of new potting soil (usually Miracle Grow). I keep trays of the cuttings moist but not drenched and in the humidity of the green house. If u pot the woody cuttings they do just as well. You can also just put the cuttings in water and they will form nubs where the roots will start to grow. Ive done it this way also but prefer the first one. Less mosquitos to worry about. The thing about the cuttings is to have patience cuz it does take a while for the root system to develop. I sent some cuttings that I had potted but no root system had developed to a trader and she got all upset at me saying that they were just "sticks". DUH!! U gotta let them grow ....... Try it. Even if u are unsuccessful the first time try it again. Thats how I've learned to propagate numerous plants. People have different methods of caring for and starting plants. U just have to find whats best and easier for you. Good lluck!
What hibiscus cuttings are you trying to do?Most will be ok if you cut a stalk, and put it in a dark area and keep the water fresh, (best if you use an aquarium pump, with hose), and that will keep it fresh, and you should have roots that will adapt to a potting soil by spring. Grow them until early fall, and plant in ground.Mike
Thanks to everyone for their help! :-)
Hi Tropical or perrienial?
I do both with dip-n-grow rooting hormone in peat based media and so ok at it. Loose some and some survive. Soil temp is key as is the water temp in the aeroponics. I try to start with slightly hard wood to green wood.
Hope this helps Dave
Perennial. Thanks for your helpful info,
Kathy
Most hibiscus will root from cuttings. Make sure it is cut just above or below a node. Pick off some of the lower leaves. Just put root tone on the end and stick it in Miracle Grow. Water. Water frequently at first...then once a week. Some root, some don't.
This works with other plants as well, esp. Hawaiian Scheffelera.
