Hi. I have a bug (I think it is a true bug) destroying all the buds on my penstemons before they can develop. First they leave black spots, then a tarry goo, and the buds turn black and hard. I can't get a picture ... they are tiny and very hard to see, but I've seen both nymphs (?) and adults sitting on the buds. When I took a portion with the tarry goo to a local nursery, they thought it was a fungus ... and I thought it might be, too, until I spotted these bugs. They are, as I said, quite tiny and overall leaf green, with a rather shield-like back, resembling soft beetles.
I'm desperate to get these bugs before they destroy my penstemons this year. (I can find them on no other plants.)
