This is the second evening that we have been hearing cicadas. Does anybody know what the natural range of this insect is in northern New England?

This site has range maps for the periodic cicadas, none of which include Vermont.

I used to hear Dog-day Cicadas or Tibicen canicularis in the summer in Maine, maybe that's what you're hearing. They're annual cicadas.
Found this site from Mass. that says some range maps are wrong, it might be worth a look:
