DIY Bird Feeders

Hereford, TX(Zone 7a)

Does anyone know of a good site for plans for bird feeders? I have some left over wood and would like to make my own.

TIA

What type of birds are you trying to attract to the boxes?

I have blue jays now. I would like to have song birds in my yard. I have a squirrel that visits every now and then. He lives me little pecan trees sprouting all over my yard. I'm off to the store to get some seed to use in the feeders I have now.

On that first site I sent you (sialis) they also have plans for making predator baffles for the poles to keep squirrels etc. out of the boxes. If you look on the left side of that page you'll see it listed. Its very easy to make.

LOL, Boy am I stupid. I just saw you asked about Bird FEEDERS not bird houses.

Duh! So sorry about that. I'll look for bird feeders.

All my natural looking bird photos are done with diy feeders. I make trays out of wood. The bottoms are mounted close to the top of the framing boards. The framing boards are wide enough for me to mount dead tree limbs securely. When the birds first come in to feed they light on the limbs. That is when I try to get the pics.

I tried the last link above, but it won't work. hmmm... I'll keep searching, but fchisolm, I like your idea about the branches. I think I'm going to try that out.

Thats weird I just tried it again ( the last link) and it worked although it took a little while to load.

drsaul, do you have many squirrels around?

Hereford, TX(Zone 7a)

no. I have seen just one the whole time I've lived here, 35yr.

Every time I try the link for 50birds, it locks my browser down.

I finely got it to work. I don't know what the problem was. Thanks for all the help. :)

Coconut shells work great. If you make smaller holes in some only the smaller birds can use them and won't get crowded out by larger birds. I use this one for a peanutbutter-seed mix and get lots of takers. Others have small holes with no perches so the cardinals don't push the smaller kids away.
The oil from peanutbutter waterproofs the shell. I will rotate this one to regular seed this fall and start a new one to be "oiled" this fall.

I also have several "hollow logs" and rough stumps sitting around that all the birds love.

If you drive around the country roads you can often find bits and pieces to use as feeders - either on the ground (if they are set up on rocks they will last longer) or hung up with pieces of chain. Your birds will love anything natural.

These will eventually rot away, but are "renewable" - just takes another pleasant drive in the country!
