acer grisieum, paperbark

Vermilion, OH

my paperbark maple has mottled leaves. the browning is irregular, not vein oriented, not tip or base oriented. The tree is young and otherwise beautiful. it is low crotched and branching in a mostly sunny (mid day) location. I bought it young three years ago. it was relocated this spring --well and carefully, with all consideration. I'm depending on it to be a great patio tree, so i have a personal investment in it's sucess.

it's done this every year. I'm attentive to watering and am sure i can rule that possibility out.

adjustment??? doesn't happen immediately.......

leaf scorch??? maybe, it doesn't follow a predictive pattern for deficiency or disease????

I'm in zone 6, ..........4 miles south of lake erie.

bugs??? had petiole borers last year, but not a sign of ANY bug this year.

mildew...... no powdery mildew, no black blotches,,,,,,, doubt fungus.

I expected a fabulous tree with little problems.
all i can think is adjustment....

does anyone have first hand experience with this tree.... info, advise, etc ??????

maybe too much sun i'm not sure if it's an understory tree or not, some maples have thin leaves that sometimes burn easy and sometimes windburn.

Mine is growing in shade with only sun for about 1hour and partial shade for about 4 hours. It grows slowly. Where I worked they planted their paperbark in full sun and it always had brown edges on the foliage. It seems to like the same conditions as the lacy leaved maples. Here is mine with fall color and you can see the foliage is holding up well into the fall.
