Newbie to MG planting-any tips?

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

I will be planting MGs in mass for the first time this spring. Most of them I have gotten from wonderful DG traders, I have kept a few from each pack and traded them for more-and one WONDERFUL trader sent me many!! (you know who you are :o) )

My question is this, do I need to keep each [plant away from the others because of cross pollination? Is there certain types that won't be true from the parent plant, or all?
This year I bought 2 plants, one Mt Fuji and one Star of Yelta. They are side by side and climbing together...will their offspring be different? I am so confused about this and was wondering if anyone had any tips.

Thanks so much, Robbi

distantkin - Welcome to the MG forum...(!)

Basically plants that are different species will not cross fertilize, but since the SOY is an Ipomoea purpurea and the Mt.Fuji is an Ipomoea purpurea x Ipomoea nil like the others of the youjiro series,e.g.,

they might cross fertilize...

Most of the cultivars listed in the PlantFiles
Ipomoea nil

Ipomoea purpurea

Ipomoea tricolor
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=Ipomoea&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=tricolor&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=genus&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

will basically 'breed true' if they are fertilized intra-cultivar but natural variations always 'crop up' and many types that are the same species often cross fertilize and various types of 'mutts' and other deviations from the usual characteristics commonly occur...

Regarding the rarer types it is best to learn simple hand pollination in addition to keeping them somewhat isolated from other plants that they are of the same species...

Here's a link to a thread that delves somewhat more indepth if you want to check it out and gradually absorb some info as you can..

some more specifics on cross pollination distances and fertilization in the thread here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/646103/

Remember that slow and steady experience, experimenting and having fun learning 'wins the race'...

Enjoy(!) your Morning Glories...

TTY,...

Ron
