Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Never used them but have checked there web site out.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I found some at grower supply for little over 3.00 each, have to buy l5 but that's ok too.

kathy

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I hat e to say it but that place is probably the last place I'd ever buy from, their high dollar, no offense though, have you ever bought from them?

growersupply is the best prices i've found. I just briefly forgot who they were and their web site.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

That's a good buy what was the shipping on them?

No I have never bought from them but I am considering getting 15 from Growers Supply.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I bought l5 of the l0 gallon and l5 of the l5 gallon shipped in 2 over sized boxes shipping was 46.?? so it added a little more to each pot, but still worth it to me I do't have a source locally not even a nursery that's willing to sell their big pots so I have to get them on line.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I know what you mean. Last year my local nursery gave me about 50 of the small pots. I never saw any real big ones or I would have asked them for them. Or at least if I could buy some.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

try the larger landscapers in your area-they have them and they might either sell or give them to you. sometimes they throw them away or sell them back to the nurseries for pennies

Portland, OR

kathy ann, we have a recycling center here where people bring all kinds of plastic pots and containers. I got all I needed for free. I had to wash them out with bleach, but it was worth it. You might call your city recycling center to find the one nearest you.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

the only land scapers I know of in our area are two, and they won't even sell their pots, cause they reuse them for other things. Trust me I've asked, anything to keep from buying them off the net. We only have one nursery outside of lowes and walmarts here. It's really the pits

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

I'm sold on grow bags. I use 15 gallon white easi-lift bags for brugmansia, squash, cukes and greens. They run about four bucks apiece in small quantities. The black bags come in quart (pennies) to 30 gallon (2 bucks) sizes. Have a bamboo groove and we're going to use the white bags with handles for transplants.

Peaceful Valley has both white easi-lift and black grow bags:

Kathy_Anne: I didn't see any pots at http://www.growerssupply.com/farm/supplies/home -- is that the source you were thinking of?

David_Paul: Aren't the bags impossible to move? They would be so heavy! Plus, don't they only make it through one season?

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

try this link

http://www.growersupply.com/blowmolcon.html

they don't quote shipping over the web site either, and it's billed again later on, not at the same checkout as the items are, just so you know, I called in to get my shipping costs so I would know what they were, and then they emailed me for permission to charge my card for the shipping charges.

I said yes, I have received the pots, they aren't the heavy duty ones, because i'd never be able to afford shipping on them, but i'm satisfied .

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

if you ever get to kcmo suburban lawn and garden sells them. i,m not sure how much 10 gal was, but the 5 gal are $1.19 ea. i saw 10 gal but decided on 5 gal.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Kathy_Anne: For $48.91 in containers (15 -10 gallon ones), they would charge $42.17 to ship to me using the slower cheapest method! Whew!

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

happy_macomb....with handles 15 gallon grow bags are heavy but the handles don't tear when I move them. Haven't used the black ones I bought. The white bags will last at least another season. Here is what they looked like in early May 15th and then again on July 1st:

Might be just the trick for growing vegetables on my patio. And might solve my brug problem, caused by too-small pots.

(David_paul, I love your neck of the woods. I just was in Connecticut last week and bought out Bishops (their woopie pies are outrageous, and the strawberries were to die for, and we can eat SO many bagette's of Judie's bread, and we only just finished the baskets of peaches and apples), not to mentions pizza at Pepi's and apricot almond tarts at Lucibello's and other pastries at Libby's in New Haven, and I only regret I didn't have time or space to get spinach bread and chicory bread and brocolli bread . . . . .)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Your right happy, shipping was high, the pots even with shipping were cheaper than paying about l5.00 for used ones at the local nursery here, they do't like to clear outthe big ones. Len, I've never gotten up that way, but that's dirt cheap. Seems like the good deals area always out of reach for me LOL

Caldwell, NJ(Zone 6a)

Most big landscape nurseries discard their pots after they have planted the contents. look in their trash or even ask them for the pots.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

YOu have to understand, i'm in a small area, there are only a few landscape gardeners here and I have checked them all and they don't even want to sell them, they reuse them to grow things in. Believe me I have checked everywhere. willing to pay what I pay for them on the internet. No go so far. I did get an idea from another person to check with the florist they get buckets in with their flowers, and they seem to dump the buckets out, I am going to check with the local florists and then i'm all checked out LOL no other local sources unless I go to another city.

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

what are you using them for? because the shipping is so high may have to consider terre cotta or other type perhaps? i dont know if dollar general or walmart or someone would carry anything that big or hardware store. looks like you are a hundred miles from memphis. maybe someone is going on a shopping trip there or something. perhaps a wholesale nursery supply company that may deliver to areas nearby?

Brunswick, GA(Zone 9a)

I bought from a manufacturer i found on the net one time. The shipping charges on the black plastic pots was 1 dollar less than the total cost of the pots i ordered! I started going to local nurseries and ran ad in the news paper. I found a landscaper that sold them to me at a decent fee, but i was buying in volume so i still paid a good bit. For instance the 1 gallon pots i got were 20 cents each on up for larger pots. They were used but no problem there. I also looked at yard sales but could not find all i needed at those. One day i went to a mulching company and bought a 20 yard dual axle dump truck load of potting soil for $120.00! A great deal! So i asked the owner if he ever came across any black plastic pots. He said how many do you want and what size do you need. He said just haul them away for free! So i filled up my pick up truck and when the potting soil arrived the driver had about 300 pots with him for free. I used to go to resteraunts and made a deal for free to haul off the large steel cans. They work well 2.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

terra cotta would be too heavy, and I need the large pots for a few fruit trees , bananas, and large brugmansias.

Tuskegee, AL(Zone 8a)

In rural areas there are sometimes farmers' cooperatives. I find my plain grow pots discarded behind nurseries (even behind HD, where there are always discarded flats!), but I get my large decorator pots from the farmers' cooperative, where they also have plain grow pots up to 25 gallons. If they don't have them in stock, they will order them.

Greenhouse growers' supply companies, even if they are not located in your area, have sales representatives that are assigned to every region, and they have trucks that come through periodically, or the reps will deliver small orders themselves. I used to use a supplier that was headquartered five or six hours away, in another state! If there is a commercial grower or a large private nursery in your area, they should be able to give you the reps' contact. They have to get their pots from somewhere!

Three other information sources I often rely on that know about supply sources are the county cooperative extension service, the state department of agriculture and the state nurseryman's association. Finding a source for large pots may not be their mission, but, I have had good experiences with referrals after a little chatting about the kinds of plants I grow or some other relevant problem I'm having. If one person doesn't know, they often know someone who will or someone else to ask.

Local networking is how I find everything, since there's no decent trade publication for the state, and I just won't pay shipping. I'd sooner drive three hours to Atlanta where I can get a lot more done, not to mention have a great night out afterwards!

Is there a real need for the pots to be round and black? If you are able to use other shapes and or colors, I have used the larger storage type containers usually available at department stores and even at hardware and big boxes.
Rubbermaid brand are very heavy and last a long time, but some of the less expensive brands have lasted well for me for years. I use a spade bit in the cordless drill and put in as many drain holes in whatever size I need for the plant and put the lid under to keep them off the ground/deck a bit.
These come in lots of different sizes and if you can watch for the sales are really a lot less expensive than "real" pots.
A few years ago I really scored and bought a bunch of orange and black ones after Halloween on clearance. That paint for plastic will make them whatever color works for you.

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

I use the big white plastic buckets that paint comes in. HD and Lowe's both sell them with their logo for a few bucks, and they have a handle. I turn them over and drill a few holes in the bottoms, and add a bit of gravel before using them for patio tomatoes, etc. They are bigger than the pot a tree I recently bought was in.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I did find some black pots, I never did get to check with the local florists though to see what buckets they had that their flowers come in, I really need to do that.

thanks though for all the suggestions.

I keep my white 5 gallon buckets to cover up plants that I leave in the ground and put mulch around them, and of course DH has 2 five gallon buckets that he uses for wash buckets, I'd use those but he'd freak LOL

Caldwell, NJ(Zone 6a)

Most large Nurseries around here disgard their Pots of all sizes into the garbage collection at the curb. I sometimes collect them although they now put them in black plastic bags. I know that some areas of the country require you to discard your trash at a dump. Perhaps you could ask the nurseries in your area to save them for you

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I wish that were true here, we have one nursery here and they sell them for just as much as I can buy brand new ones for on the internet.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Must be a lack of competition kathy_ann. I needed seed starting trays this spring, couldn't find them in the stores (it was late), felt uncomfortable asking a nursery but when I did...wow. They took me in their back shed, gestured to piles of pots in all sizes and said, "Take all you want".

We both benefited. Rather than shop around for price on everything, when I need something I go back there.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

it probably is, they said they reuse them.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

In my small town our nurseries want to make a profit and they use every means possible. If the price isn't to bad I will go for it. We have a fairly new landscaper here and I have been meaning to call them to see what they do.

In the most recent issue of Horticulture there is a very interesting article on how to turn your used pots into a hypertufa like pot. It is simple and straight forward and has good directions for making a "silk purse out of a sow's ear", to phrase the poet.

I have ordered from Novesel Enterprises for several years now. If your order is over $75, then the shipping is free(at least that was the amount when I ordered last spring). They are very fast and generally your order arrives in about a week from order. They have everything I need for potting and customer service is exceptional. If you watch their web site they have frequent sales and some really good buys. Buying by the case is a savings too!

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I didn't realize their shipping was free. that may make it worth the while. I don't remember if I saw any large pots there, but don't need anymore now, but will also check with them in the future, even if they are higher, it would probably be worth it in the long run with free shipping.

Mooresville, NC(Zone 7b)

I saw where your located near Little Rock, AR. Probably worth a trip into town to scope out all the nurseries, landscapers, etc. You might only need to make one trip down and end up with all you need.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I'm a little over an hour from there.

it would be worth the trip though

Kathy Ann:
You might try american plant products in oklahoma city. Ive been told they would do a drop for me if I order $200.00 and meet me in a large parking lot. I realize $200.00 is quite a bit of money but when you are talking 50.00 in shipping it might be worth getting a bigger supply. I am not sure if they ship to arkansas but I would think they would.
What part of arkansas are you in? There are a couple of blow mold companies in south Louisiana. Last time I checked they were trying to get me to order a pallet of them.... ooops.
I am not sure if this helps but I like to try. I will look tomorrow for some of my other sources.
Dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Zorba you are correct it is free with $75.00 order. Sounds like the way to go.
Dave
