raydio, it's great to see your success, I'm now trying to grow some red papaya and so far it's lost leaves (it got lost in the mail for over 2 months) but is still hanging in there
Papaya dreams........
Look what I found on my plant last week.
did you forget the pic?..... lol
That was weird; I guess the message went through while I was waiting for the picture to load. That's a new one.
Great Ardesia!
Are you going to take your plant in for the winter?
R.
If it supposed to go into the 40's I will bring it in at night but it won't go that low for a while around here. Downscale_babe gave me this one; she grew it from a red papaya seed.
Ardesia
I got one of those buds too!
It is supposed to go down to the 40's tonight.I haven't decided if I'm going to bring it in or not.I think that I'll just cover it because it will still be pretty warm for the rest of the week.
Woo Hoo, congratulations.
An evil raccoon (gosh, I hate those critters) attacked my tree and tore a few leaves and flowers off but there are others so I still have hope.
where could i get one of these?
......the grocery store. Downscale_babe grew these from seeds she took out of papayas she bought to eat.
ok i'll see bout getting some..
My plant came from the seeds a friend saved from a papaya he bought at "Food Lion".
You can have it if you want it--anybody!--it's going down to 40 tinight, so it needs a warm home yeaterday! Shovels provided.
raydio,
you haven't sadi whether your fruit ripened and if it was tasty?
No damage to the papaya that I can see.It did go down to the 40's last night but today was sunny and in the high 60's.We will be going back to high 70's by the end of the week,so I'll keep it out side a bit longer.
I bought the red papaya from costco. The fruit is very big. They are now carrying small papaya the size of mango.I haven't tried it yet.
Costco fans,The fuyu persimmons are here!
is costco a grocey store?
It is an everything store. Closest one is in Charleston, just south of the 526/17 South interchange.
oh like a walmart?
Well, more like a Sam's but with a slightly higher quality of merchandise.
oh......
I wish I had a costco near me. Costco compared to Sam's is like walmart compared to target.
Alas my paps didn't reach maturity. :-((
The largest fruit was 11.5 inches long and others were nearly so.
I had to remove them from the plant due to the cold and kept them in the house for a couple weeks to ripen, but they just laid there, greenly.
I finally cut one open and found that the seeds were still soft and white so although the fruit had quit growing, it was still some time short of maturity. The flesh was white and firm and only slightly fragrant.
Oh well, it was a glorious plant anywho!
R.
That is how I feel; the raccoons keep eating the buds on mine. They smell good so they must taste good too. They have broken off all the lower leaves but it is still a beautiful and interesting plant.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Happy Thanksgiving
raydio
There is a wonderful salad made from green papaya. It is available at most Tai restaurants. If you still have the fruit try to get the recipe.Unripe papaya and papaya leaves are also used as meat tenderizers.
Alice
Are you at home or in Jax?Where ever enjoy those grand babies.

I still have buds on my papaya but they are not going anywhere.

I was wondering about using green papaya in a chutney perhaps or as a pickle and neglected to look for recipes. Good to know I can, even though it's too late now.
Next time......
Happy Thanksgiving, all!
