If anyone else has been, like me, hoping to stumble onto Dancing Dolls salvia....Roger's has it. I just happened to stop there yesterday. I'm now the happy owner of 2..would have gotten 3-4 but was in the Wrangler with the top and windows off and I had to squeeze them in between my feet all the way home. I won't even say much about the $40 star magnolia to be had for $5 and I had nowhere to put it...sniffle,sniffle,sob.
So Cal people...Dancing Dolls salvia
Any of you who like Salvias have to get this one, it is really gorgeous, mine have been blooming nonstop since about March or April and the bicolor flowers are really beautiful, it's one of my favorite Salvias!
Yes....after I saw yours I was hoping I would crosspaths with one somewhere, sometime. When the DH said, "I thought you weren't going to be getting any plants today and where are you going to put it?" I said, "Oh, you don't understand...this is 'Dancing Dolls'!" Maybe I should drive back up there and get one or two more, just in case......perhaps that star magnolia is still there...nah.
Hi there! I'm in San Diego and have not heard of Dancing Dolls or of Rogers.
Can you give me more info on either one? I'll do a search but I'd love to chat with you here, too!
Edited to add that I found the picture of it. Very pretty!!

Hi, lauriegayle..Roger's is Roger's gardens in Corona del Mar...not the cheapest nursery around...but we quite often are up that way and there are several nurseries that I can't pass without stopping in 'just to take a look'. Just in case you should make it up that way...go to the Plant Depot in San Juan Capistrano also. I love all salvia, but I was coveting ecrane's Dancing Dolls once I'd seen a pic of it. If you're interested in salvias, go to the salvia forum and you'll find a bunch more you'd like to have! There's a chance Mission Hills Nursery might have it...I usually stop there when I'm down that way. My favorites closer to you are Cedros Gardens and Mission Hills. Up this way, my favorite is Buena Creek Gardens.
"I thought you weren't going to be getting any plants today . . " Too funny! How many times have I heard that? ...and, the all too familar. "Where are you going to put it?" lol Sounds like Dancing Dolls is a must have.
Those 2 one gallon, 2 foot tall pots were squeezed between my feet on the front floorboard for the rest of the day with the top off and windows out with me trying to keep them from being blown to bits. They'd gone through a mini-hurricane by the time we got home. I'm always sorry if we don't take my car...I might find a piece of furniture, or plants, or plants, or plants......
Where there's a will...there's a way! We should always know better than to go anywhere without a plant-worthy vehicle. :)
Sherry,
I was at Rogers yesterday too. lol What time were you there? I got there about 2:30 and stayed until almost 4pm. That would have been too funny if we had seen each other. lol
I was on a search for some Ornamental Kale/Cabbage seeds. Rogers usually has a good selection, but not anymore. They have limited them to Renee's Seeds and Botanical Interests and neither of these companies sell those seeds. :-( I'm glad to hear you got the plant you were after. :-)
Donna
Donna, I was thinking of you when I posted about Roger's! I figured that if you liked 'Hot Lips', you'd love Dancing Dolls also. We were there maybe around one o'clock. Didn't stay long. Once I realized I wouldn't be able to take more with me, I didn't want to become any more annoyed. Even the DH was asking why in the world I didn't get the star magnolia. He has a big lock box in the back of the Wrangler that's full of stuff and effectively takes up all available space, whereas my beloved Cherokee will carry 42 1-gallon pots in the back with the seat down. So every time we go anywhere he wants to take his car and I'm saying, "Ohhhh, I don't know....." I ALWAYS find something I don't have room to carry home.
I was over poking in the seeds also....picked up some verbascum seeds, but I have so many seeds to sow right now that I didn't allow myself to get more. Sowing your cerinthe seeds this week also. That would have been too funny to be standing there in the seeds and looked around to see you next to me!!
I was in WallyWorld yesterday and indulged, too. Got a 3 ft. Duranta for $5! I've wanted one ever since I saw a picture on DG. Maybe it's this funny weather? lol
Donna, our Constance is about 12 ft long now, but nary a bloom. Does it bloom only in spring?
Kathleen,
I don't know why your passi isn't blooming yet. Mine has been blooming since early spring and doesn't stop until late fall. Maybe it needs to be alittle older, so next spring you should have lots of beautiful blooms. :-) I have a ton of babies coming up again...anyone want some Constance Elliot passifloras? lol
Donna
ps, I can't find a picture of the S. dancing dolls. Can someone point me in the right direction please. I'd love to see it.
Here you go: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/149121/
k, Donna...maybe it has to get a bit older, mine hasn't flowered yet either, but it sure does grow fast! Donna, do you get volunteers?! I gave Harold the Blue Dawn M.G. and just got a d-mail from him asking if it ever flowers and mine flowers continuously. Perhaps they need to mature a bit or get established.
Hmmm...must be a variety thing. That Blue Horizon I got from Mark has bloomed twice, but the plant is in horrible shape - just hasn't recovered from repotting. We can wait for Constance - since the vine is so beautiful, it should be quite a show when the flowers come.
Thanks Liz for the link. That is a really pretty color for a salvia. :-)
K and Sherry, you won't be dissapointed in waiting for those flowers. lol
Donna
Donna, you should see DH. Every day he goes out and talks to Constance - keeps her going in the right direction, etc. It's his baby! lol
Not that there's anything wrong with that! *grin*
No, nothing wrong, LG, but decidedly odd if you know him! :-)
I stumbled across this thread yesterday and today I drove myself to Rogers and picked up one of those sweet Dancing Dolls! Thank you for the info, what a great nursery that I hadn't been to in a year. I always find great things there! Thanks again! - Karen
If you drove all the way down from Pasadena,I wish you could also have made it to Plant Depot! I've sown seeds from Dancing Dolls and they're up...I can't wait to see what kind of babies come from this! Dancing Dolls is beautiful, isn't it?
When ecrane posted a link to a picture of Dancing Dolls I could hear my whole garden saying"Oh yea". If I had more time I would love to have checked out Plant Depot. I got to Rogers at 2:21 and knew I had to beat traffic getting back. It was a rush! I walked in and immediately asked if they had any. The woman got on her walkie-talkie and asked where they were and the response from the other end was "I've got one. I'm holding it." The woman asked if she was keeping it or was it for sale. pause. "sigh, it's for sale." I'll take it! Got it, paid for it and was back in the car at 2:27. Six Minutes!
It didn't work. I sat in traffic all the way home!
I do believe my Dancing Dolls were worth it.
digatunnel, That's about like me. Some years ago when we first got internet at the library I thought it was a big mistake and totally not a good idea, a waste. Then I saw a rose, 'Claudia Cardinale' in a magazine...had to have it! Within a few minutes I was able to track the grower and who had it...Burkard in Pasadena. I called and had them hold it and went to pick it up the same day. Still have the rose...love internet! The only way to go that far in SoCal anymore is definitely on weekends and even that is crowded. I'm glad you got your Dancing Dolls.
