I don't have ornamental grasses. Yeah a thread for unusual baskets sounds cool. Or even any unusual containers to make arrangements in.
Dave's Garden newsletter
That would make a great thread, although I don't think I have anything unusual, but I'll be on a lookout for them now. YQ, won't you start the thread for us?
Ughhhh.... I am slow as Chrismas.... NO wait..A lot slower! I can try to this week-end.
YQ, where is Emory TX? Did you get affected by Hurricane Humberto? It's been raining here ALL day!
I am in NE Texas...no where near the coast. We have not even gotten rain or anything.
no rain here to report today! It has been quite warm and I actually sat in the garden.
My garden is looking a mess by the way! I have been collecting seeds and dry them in the greenhouse.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyones baskets and unusual containers!
me too, Terri! And I really am anxious to post mine... I just hope I have time to gete into all of that. ok, ok, I will...LOL
Hi Yardqueen, how many baskets do you have approx? including boring ones! (although I like all baskets)
I will count the ones I have out when I do the pictures. Ihave no idea how any I have. I will not be able to tell you because some are packed up in craft stuff, some in christmas stuff and so I can't know all together. but I can count whaat is out and on the shelves inthe kitchen and other places also that I can see...
Hi You Three
Please don't go away. I drop in to this forum regularly & really enjoy it a lot. I'm a total techno- dummy & haven't been able to get any of my pics to post so haven't felt like I had anything to contribute. Now we've had a killing frost so most of my home-grown materials are limp & dead in the garden :o( . Guess it would've been more polite to @ least post a compliment from time-to-time rather than admire & leave. Sorry! But please believe that your contributions are being appreciated by @ least one person who's kinda shy about not being able to fully participate. Thanks & hang in there!
Donna
Wow, Donna, it's already cold where you're living? You can do stuff with everygreens and twigs too. Thanks for the encouragement...we could sure use some once in a while. Please don't hesitate to join in...pictures or no pictures. If you need help uploading pics, maybe one of us could help you?
Hi Karmaplace
Thanks for your warm response. Yes, the temp. early Thurs a.m. dropped to -1.3... let's see, that's about 29F & all the tender plants including tomatoes, zuchinni, E.S. hydrangea, basil, colocacia, etc. were whacked by the frost. Today it was 22 (that's 72F) so the weather is pretty unpredictable here. Only the plants in the east garden were frozen. The begonias on the west of the house were untouched.
During the winter 2 years ago we had 42 days of snow cover (& not much @ that!). This past winter saw us with 186 days of deep snow cover & boy did we have mold "issues" when it finally melted! July was hot, for here, but I suspect nothing like you folks in southern U.S. experience as "normal". This is part of what appeals to me about the opportunity to chat with you gardeners from other parts of the world-- we all have our challenges & disappointments but still keep faith that we'll do things differently 'next year' & so will the weather!
I marvel @ some of the incredibly exotic plants you folks in the warm zones grow & yet, when I see something in your floral designs that will grow here too I feel kinda 'connected' with you folks. Gosh, this sounds pretty sappy (but it's true! LOL).
I shall continue to investigate how to access my pics & may have to re-register from my email account rather than the gmail I primarily use. Thanks for the offer of support... I do appreciate it. In the meantime, I'll be popping in regularly & from now on will @ least say "hello". G'nite all.
Donna
Thanks Donna for joining in. We definitely need the participation. It's really nice to have you here because most of time we get so excited about floral design that we don't discuss growing cut flowers. This year was my first year growing flowers to cut as well as growing them in general. Because I started late, I did not do it as seriously as I will next year. I have some hollyhocks started for next year and bought seeds including larkspur, statice, and oriental poppies, but don't know what to do with them yet. I know they will make wonderful cut flowers if I'm successful with growing them from seed.
I never thought about the mold issues that can arise due to melted snow. Probably because we never get snow, although we had a white christmas one year....the year right before the big hurricane flooded New Orleans. We think it was an omen...and will not wish for snow ever again....lol. Thanks for looking into uploading your pictures. I'm looking forward to seeing them. Well I'm off to work...have a great day!
Yardqueen, I "stole" a couple of canna seeds from my neighbor's yard. I read on the canna forum that it needs to be scored and soaked before planting. Have you ever done this or do you just thin them? I wanted to try planting her seeds to replace mine. I took a pic of a floret I borrowed from the plant to show you. Is this a common canna?
Hello Donna, thanks for joining in, it is nice to know that you have been enjoying what we have been making and thanks so much for letting us know,it's very much appreciated.
Looking forward to your baskets at christmas Yardqueen haha!
You are not allowed to steal canna flowers karma, tut tut. naughty girl!
Karma, I have only planted seeds once in a sixpack and they all came up. I used a small drill ( like they use in nail salons) which is how I was instructed by the lady who gave them to me. You only drill until you see white. You can also use a file or you can nick with a knife. whichever is easy for you... I think I soaked them over night. They say if you don't do the drilling/ filing thing it can take 5 years to germinate! I think your canna may be this one:

Terri, she did not steal the flower, she borrowed it! She stole the seeds though....
Yardqueen, you can't exactly 'borrow' a floret, it's not going back to the plant with cellotape!!
send me a couple Karma!

Well, she said she borrowed it. She must have.... She didn't borrow it from the plant... She must have borrowed it from the owner. Yeah, that's it ... she will pay her back when she gets one, right Karma?
Jingle bells jingle bells jingle all the way.....................................................................................................................................
Oh what fun it is to see Yardqueen's baskets hurray!
Are you hinting???? I will try tomorrow. It is almost midnight here... I am off to bed!
Nitey Night!!!!
Awwwwwwwwe, YQ, thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt, but, ummmmmm, okay, I stole the flowers too. It was not under my control... "Lucifer" made me do it!
Terri, dmail me your address and I'll send you some. I'll put on my ninja outfit tonight and collect more seeds. If I don't get caught, you may receive more than a couple in the mail.....that makes you an accomplice! I've never sent seeds before, do I just throw it in an envelope and send it off or is it more involved?
These ARE seeds, YQ?
The black thing is the seed. There should be 2 or three in each brown thing. I can send you some seeds also but I don't know which cultivar they are... When you mail seed you need to use a bubble envelope. These seeds are large and would be crushed by equipment the PO uses. You can have it "Hand Cancelled" or marked fragile. Ask your PO for their suggestion.
Terri,
I may take some basket pics in a few minutes, I am in the mood.... but I dont think I will take them down as it will require climbing. I will just try to zoom in. I will also try to count some of them.
Thanks YQ. I may take you up on the seed offer. Let me try these first to see if I'm even competent.
My battery in my camera ran down. I am charging it now. I was almost finished with what I can take. I forgot to count any of them.... I am too tired. As I said most of them I just zoomed in. there are a couple or so shots I took baskets off the shelf that were within reach. I am tired now. Not form the baskets. from mowing. In the Texas sun... poor me... woe is me... I will let it charge a little more and then try to finish
A belated Thank You, Terri, for your warm welcome.
Lana, my complaining about snow & mold & frost, etc. was pretty insensitive of me... YOU truly know how "nature's wrath unleashed" feels. Here on the Canadian prairies we are unaccustomed to experiencing devastating weather & my heart goes out to all of you folks whose lives are changed by such horrific events.
It sounds like you've done wonderfully well with your first year of gardening & I applaud the interesting seed choices that you've made. German statice & sea lavender are 2 perennials that we can grow here which both have delicate, ethereal flowers-- great for arrangements &/or drying.
I have just about had a meltdown trying (& failing) to post pictures... turns out there really IS something wrong with our computer & it's not all my ineptitude. Am going to do up a little arrangement with sweet peas, sea lavender & whatever else I can find. I'll take a picture & then if the "ol' Dell" & I can ever come to an amicable agreement about NOT playing hide'n'seek with the pics, will post it.
I love doing little arrangements in cream & sugar sets. I have a few little pieces from both of my late grannies & it's so nice to have a mini bouquet perched on the window sill above the sink. C'mon folks! tell me you can see it all now... ;o)
It never occurred to me that you could grown a canna from seed! Here, I believe people buy either the bulb or "started" plant because of our shorter growing season & of course, the bulb must be lifted in the fall.
Hope all of you have had a lovely weekend. Bye for now.
Donna
173 posts last week. Woohooooo!
Funny seed snatching article I ran across googling seed pods. http://mrbrownthumb.blogspot.com/2007/09/confessions-of-seed-snatcher.html I will be ringing my neighbor's doorbell for a confession tomorrow.
Donna, I look forward to your sweet peas and lavender...the combination must smell heavenly. Be sure to save the pictures to show at a later date if you can't get the computer to cooperate. Thanks for trying. I bet your arrangements in cream and sugar sets look lovely. They would be very welcomed in our tea time thread.
Well I posted some of my baskets on a new thread as Terri suggested. I did not finish as I am so sleepy now I am about to fall out of my chair....
I would love to see your little arrangements Donna!
Yardqueen, Don't fall out of your chair!!

Really?
Hi basket case!, I think we will have more than 14 this time!
So, Karma thinks you are in the lead with the baskets, I will have to dig deep and see if I have any more lurking about anywhere, won't I ?
I have missed you, honest.
What are we going to do when we run out of baskets???????????? in the mean time.................
see you back at the basket headquarters!
cheers!
I love your Bud vase!

I think I really am a basket case....HELP!!

Have another party! that should bring some bottles in.
I am too old to party!!!
