Found this one on a Malva moschata
CLOSED: what kind of fly could this be ?
It looks like it is eating an insect...
I have seen one recently added to the diptera site with an elongated face, which yours looks to have, it seemed strange. I don't remember which family it was though!
I don't think it's eating an insect, the tongue is stretched to the flower which it looks to be feeding on.
I thought it looked like a Syrphid Fly so checked out the Gallery at diptera.info, I think it's a female Rhingia campestris in the Family Syrphidae.

The links now don't seem to show the pic, you will have to go to the Gallery.
I think that's the one, wallaby! I compared it with both sites and only the colour doesn't seem to match, but I guess that this is probably due to the fact that mine was taken in the shadow and I remember that I noticed it in the flight before it landed that it had a reddish hue.
