small pine

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I am looking for a small blue pine. If it happens to grow somewhat horizontal instead of vertical, that would be nice too. Is there such a thing?

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Does it have to be a pine, or would a spruce do?

If it has to be a pine, there are one or two semi-dwarf cultivars of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) that might fit, but the species isn't very well adapted to the NC climate. Other pines are mostly green without much blue tone.

yes, a spruce would do. Any conifer.

Atlas Cedar comes to mind... http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/67870/

Betty, here is a weeping picea spruce. It stands about 3 feet tall.

Hey, that's pretty cool, Dea! I'd not seen/heard of one before your pic.

It reminds us of the cultivar Baby Blue Eyes. We have truly turned into coneheads :)

Oh, I love those. Now to find them and afford them, lol. Did you buy yours from a local nursery, Dea, or did you order them from someplace?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

It was a local nursery. We got them for 75% off at the end of November when they were ready to shut down for the winter. Lucky enough to get it for $25. Up here, many of the places freak out about over-wintering as they shut down, so we go bargain hunting in November and just keep them in pots piled up with mulch til ready to plant....

Some we have are still in pots as we haven't been able to build our house yet.

rcn, those are beautiful but I need an upright plant, not a ground-cover type.
Dea, you know, you gave me an idea. There are some nice nurseries in upscale communities just west of us. Everyone closes down at the end of October, when all the summer residents and tourists leave. I will run up there and see if I can find what I need.
thanks so much for all the help, folks.
