Lily garden catalog is here

Fenton, MO(Zone 6b)

Lots of new things getting a bit pricey with some of the new OT going for $50

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Everybody's got to make a living ;0)

Edited to add
I popped over to the daylily forum one day and noticed a coversation/thread on a hem. seedling over on Lily Auction went for over 3 grand. Now that IS nuts. Makes it seem that $50 is cheap. Lol!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Holy cow! What is going for 50?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Yeah, those "Connoisseur" lilies are up there. At the same time, some of the others have gone down. "Luminaries" is now $10, as are several others.

What does everyone think of "Secret Message"? Has anyone seen it in person? I'm not so sure about that one. (Not that it's in my budget, anyhow....$50 is closer to my entire lily budget, lol....)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Not to be blunt or anything, but... S. M. is absolutely hideous. Period.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Nothing wrong with being blunt. :)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

If something like that turned up in my seedling patch I would name and introduce it as "Compost". On the other hand I wouldn't want to snitch a name that my good friend buggy might want to use some day (e. g. Dry Rot).

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Coming from Buggy I'd buy something called Compost. Heck! She could sell me just about anything ;)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

So magnolia, did you buy the Skyline lily and get the free Dry Rot? Just wonderin'....

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Well, if Magnolia won't admit to it, I will. I thought the name was hysterical...and the lily wasn't bad, either, lol

And, I'm glad someone else came out and said Secret Message looked awful. I kept thinking it looked, well, kind of unhealthy.....

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You got it pard, I bought it last year. And I loved them both.
Are you telling me S.M is going for $50?? (this is the same lily that PNWLS had last spring for $17?)

You see, for some reason the Lily Garden always forgets to send me a catalog, meanwhile, my mom, who I told about TLG, gets one and has to call me today asking if I got mine. Talk about UGH!! Then, the website isn't up yet, so I have no idea what you all are talking about.

So what is exciting in there? You must share with poor little old me. Lol!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

There is a Mak asiatic named Sidney and only 5 bucks. It's cute!

Susybell, unhealthy says it all. It doesn't even appear to have good form. It looks like a virused Luminary!!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Pard, thanks for being blunt. I just couldn't bring myself to say that!

The Mak "Megan" is kind of different, too-and bright! It's $5 as well.
She's added Mak's "Elise" at $12.50, too.

She's got a new OP collection for $32 that's one each of Silk Road, Scheherazade, Pizzazz, and Caravan.

Pizzazz and Caravan are now $10/ea instead of $12.50,
Luminaries is $10 (and doesn't look virused ;) )
Catherine the Great is $10
Silk Road is still $10
Scheherazade is $5.50

Seems like she's reduced her offerings of pure Oriental lilies, too.

The only one of her "high-end" ones that really seems interesting to me (but I am a newbie....) is "Makepeace". However, it looks a lot like Buggy's "Awesome" to me-but "Awesome" was $15....(sold out now and on my list for next year....)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Buggy's 'Awesome' is awesome. Her pictures don't do it justice. It has this glow that you just wouldn't believe. It was one that I added last year, thinking it looked like a color I just didn't have and wow! It is great. It is worth making a list for, in my opinion.

It's the coloration about S.M. that I don't really like. I like the waves the petals have, but if the color isn't right, I simply wouldn't even consider it. That color combo isn't one of my favorites anyway.

I wish I could just sneek a peek at that catalog. I've seen some of Mak's new asiatics on the Lily Nook site and B&D Lilies. I bought one called Jasmyn. Very cute. I'm trying to add a few more asiatics (if only they smelled as wonderful as the others). Mak definitely has some nice colors to choose from in his newer selections of asiatics. 'Elise' is a nice one. My favorite asiatics though, are those with the species like ,turks cap flowers. I'm finding myself more drawn to them every year.

Thanks for the sneek peek. Hoping they didn't forget me again.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I picked up some Megans from last fall's PNWLS sale, they were only 3/$7. I don't care for them either-- nice flowers but too congested at the top of the stem for my taste. If they grow the same way next year they will be leaving my garden.

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

Not too fond of Secret Message, Maybe it looks better in person? I like Midsummer's Eve and Makepeace. One of my faves from the PNWLS was an Ed McCrae bulb -- Edith.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes, Midsummer's Eve was the other one that I kind of liked, but I'm not sure how different it is from others that are already out there? It's also only $30. But, still, not this year for me, anyhow.

For her sake, I really hope that S.M. is just a bad picture!

One of the best things about being new is that I can still find things for very little $$ that will keep me happy for a while while I learn (and potentially kill things...)

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

My absolute favorites, and lilies that have been persistant and strong performers for more than one season have been....Tiger Babies, Ariadne (they have gotten better every year), Coral Butterfly, White Henry, Red Velvet, Citronella, Brushstroke, Scheherazade, Copper Crown, Loreto, among others. Muscadet, L.davidii, put on a great show this first year. Casa Blanca has been utterly reliable for years.....none of these is terribly unusual or expensive....

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Guess I'm off to a good start, then! I've got White Henryi, Scheherazade, Red Velvet, Viva, Eurydice, Conca D'or, Citronella, Copper Crown. I've also got a dark red Asiatic with a lost tag and one that was supposed to be Paramount but is too pale of a pink to actually be Paramount. Plus, Stargazer and Starfighter and two little "pot lilies" that I got as bonuses with a plant order.

I've been considering "Ariadne" to add for next year, so now it's definitely on the list.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Take it from me, you'd love' Ariadne'. Simple. Beautiful. Elegant. Perfect. I must add that I am extremely fond of all of the North Hybrids.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Viva is delicate. Keep planting seed. One year it just may not come back. All your other choices are great. Get Ariadne NOW. Ditto Sally if she has it.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

I have to agree with Pard. When I first saw "Secret Mesaage" I thought it had a virus(es). Nothing too exciting this year. Some of the lilies went up $2.5 to $5. What the heck is up with those $50 lilies? Unless she is marketing them to other growers/breeders?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Secret Message went for $17.50 in last fall's society catalog. It was a "sneak preview" and no picture (and no hint of how much the price would go up). Maybe there was enough interest based on just the description to warrant anticipation of irrational lily exuberance and higher price in their catalog. I have 4 or 5 trumpets that look like Makepeace and I grew those from seed at the cost of maybe 25 cents each or maybe double that if I take into account the few that didn't make it.

I think it comes down to if you are a dedicated collector you will pay anything to continue filling out your collection. I know all about that because I collected Nolan Ryan baseball cards and have just about every card of every brand that ever came out. At least they will hold some amount of value but not so with the lilies.

I'm sure most of us just want nice lilies in our gardens without having to mortgage the house to get them. It makes me wonder if the trend is heading in the same direction as hemerocallis... All I want from my daylillies is flower above the foliage and good performance, not golden crinkled edges (which I have heard don't open well in the PNW anyway).

Just a few of my thoughts on ridiculously overpriced cultivars of ________ (fill in the blank).

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Dittos to all! I too took one look at that SM lily and thought Virused. I am definately addicted to my lilium but I want healthy and beautiful. I'm not sure this lily achieves either of those.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Would someon please post a picture of SM? Is it in their on-line catalog? I'm curious. ;)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Okay....I got my hands on that catalog today (my mom's). 'Miss Libby' looks nicer than what I thought it was described last spring in the society sale. Wouldn't pay that for it, but it is lovely.

There are a few in there that I can't help but love. The North Hybrids that she has crossed continue to be something that is unusual, unique and something I really haven't seen anybody else focus on, which I think is neat. You just can't find this type of flower anywhere else, at least not that is as easy to grow.
Buggy's 'Awesome' definitely is much more stunning (I know she is sold out already, but I just had to say) than Makepeace, for a fraction the price.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

Boy if I could get 50 quid for OT's I would work harder at breeding them. Tried some this year with no luck yet. My "Silk Road" x Yellow trumpet (tet) are fattening up nicely though. Perhaps I will get some interesting seed.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I have 2 Silk Road pods going:

S. R. X OT seedling w/red splash in center (I posted a pic back when it bloomed)

S. R. X Tet. improved Yellowstone trumpet

I have read that S. R. is fertile w/tet pollen. I have also had pods turn up and get fat and be full of nothiong but chaf! The last sentence is a general statement not specific to S. R.

Intercessor, we must compare children when they bloom (fingers crossed).

As far as I know magnolialover is the sole successful germinator of my American West cross I did last year. Magnolia, could you please report progress here with a picture (LOL).

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

I have several dozen trumpet seedlings from you last year. I think they were all straight trumpets though.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

They probably all are straight trumpets. I had very little extra OT seed to send out and just a couple of people got some. It is just as well because germination was extremely poor. The few I got to germinate all croaked. I donated a bit to NALS and I don't think anyone purchased it and that is just as well. If it shows up in next year's sale for 50 cents just ignore it....

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Okay, all these seedlings in this nice well drained mix looked great until last night and the 5 inches or so of rain. I moved them in the greenhouse today, just to keep them dry and still getting light. So these little brown specks are new today. Hopefully they will dry out and be okay. Just about ready to do a speed dry from the bottom of the pot with a blow dryer. Lol!

Pard must be laughing because she knew I'd show you all the picture of her sweet cross.

Does anyone have the tetra 'Ice Caves'? Is it really as nice as it looks? Seems like that would be a good one to use as crossing material.

Didn't know that about 'Silk Road'. If I ever get this crossing thing figured out, I will use that one.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Ahhh! The rare seedlings of AW X GATT. I was sure you still had them, magnolia.

I haven't bit for Ice Caves yet. For that price ($20) I think I would like to see them in person first. Keep in mind they are a strain, not a clone so there could be some variation. I have a very nicely growing pot of NALS seedlings coming along that are #66-195 and described as green sdlg X green sdlg. Hoping for at least some bloom (green I hope) next year.

There isn't anything special to figure out, magnolia. You just need to pay attention to information the REPUTABLE seller gives in their description. I know buggy, TLG and B & D do this. They will mention if the lily is a tetraploid. OTs are polyploid. If it isn't mentioned at all, it is most likely diploid. So tetraploid is typically the highest chromosone count so the pollen can go on anything with equal to or lower count, which I guess means it can go on anything. But there are also other factors for successful fertilization but I don't try to figure those out (such as pollen tube length). Most of our common lilies are diploid so can cross with each other in the same division. Trumpet lilies are especially fertile in my experience.

Fox River Valley Are, WI(Zone 5a)

And we thought TLG was getting excessive...
http://www.lilybulb.com/l9040.html :*)

I have to say though that TLG has been very generous with extra bulbs. I am not sure if she lists the prices as per bulb but, when I ordered some bulbs I got 2 or 3 of each when I thought I was only buying 1. Judith is also very good at fixing errors. I added a bulb via e-mail, however when it didn't ship with the original order, she sent 4 instead of the 1 purchased!

Andrew

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Wow, I hadn't seen that. It's nice, but maybe it's something that looks more amazing in person. It certainly doesn't beg me to spend the nearly $60 they are asking for it. Perhaps this is the way lilium culture is going, or trying to go. Does it look that special?? Or is it just me thinking it doesn't??

From my experience, if Judith perhaps thinks she is sending out something a bit small, she will send multiples. But 4? Wow, intercessor, you're lucky.

Hey pard, look at what your upcoming crosses could go for in years to come ;) You too, Andrew ;)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I wish....

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I've got to agree that Judith is very generous. I got lots of extras, too.

So, a question. I"m thinking that I'll get 3 Ariadne. What else should I add? I'd prefer to stay at $10 and under a bulb. I don't have Silk Road yet? And, I've decided to join the PNWLS, so should I order now or wait for their sale?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

WAIT!!!! SR is usually $6 in the sale. I always wait till the sale. However the sale is a short list compared to the catalog. Typical savings on Columbia-Platte lilies is aroud 30% or so, sometimes more. There are plenty to choose from all things considered. In fact, all of the C-P Asiatics and trumpets were priced at 3$ or $4. Then there are the other 2 providers of lilies-- Ed McRae and Northwest Bulbs (aka Mak Lilies and Perennials). Susy, if you don't mind driving over to Mt. Hood C. C. you won't have to pay postage!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I'd wait too. The deals are the best & I have found the selection to be very interesting. Some, the Lily Garden will offer that aren't in the catalog.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Sounds great, thanks so much!
Mt Hood C.C. isn't that bad of a drive for me, not much further than the outlet mall, after all, lol

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

The Lily Garden has also updated their website.
