what are the brown things at base of leaves on a tiger lilly

Renton, WA(Zone 7a)

I have these brown things on the stem at base of leaves on my tiger lilly, they almost look like tiny bulbs, does anyone know what they are ? thankyou carol

Hey Carol,
You bet! They are seeds, and they will grow more lilies if you will plant them...they are so easily grown! Good luck.

They are tiny bulbs=) True name is bulbils. Mine tend to form on my asiatics and I let them get a little size on them, one whitish root at the bottom and a tiny green shoot on top then I pluck them and put them in a tray of potting mix in a protected area and let them root in. It will take a season or two but then you have more bulbs.

Isn't nature amazing! LOL

If you were being serious, I would love to have tiger lily bulbils. I bought some on ebay and managed to lose them.

Thanks,
Jen

Mine just drop on the ground and burrow their way in. Aren't old "l.tigrium splendens" wonderful?

yes, Wanda, I love them!

Wanda, are those the ones that carry the virus?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

They are asymptomatic carriers of TBV which can then be spread by sucking insects. It's believed that all lilies carry some virus but it's when they get 2 or 3 that they really become sick. TBV causes the most unsightly damage, to the blooms.

Thanks O'Mobywan-Kneoby, Lily Wizard! :)

LOL goof.....

Moby;
Question please, when you said 2 or 3, could you elaborate? 2 or 3 years old plant, or 2 or 3 bulbs? If I were to isolate them in a half whiskey barrel planting. Would it be safer? From the way it sounds. Flying insects will likely spread the virus regardless? But, I love these lilies sooooooo. Whoa!

I think O'Moby-wan means viruses... :)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Ticker is correct, I was referring to the number of viruses within a lily.
There are a few others around there that are centainly more knowledgeable than me on the subject.

Lilies have their diseases and stressors just like any other plant. And, like any perennial, they sometimes get sick and die.

Go ahead and have your tiger lilies! Some people refuse to have them, some plant them well away and some plant them right in with the others. But you can have a virus crop up anytime. I have ~ and that was with no tigers around. Just practice good garden hygiene. :)

Thanks Moby,
I appreciated the input. Looking forward to see you more often on your new posting in the future.

I plant all my tigers in one bed to reduce the problems. However, since virus tend to be carried by insects, eliminating tigers in my beds would not solve the problem. Bees & gnats etc can fly a mile a day in their quest for food. I live in town with LOTS of gardens in the vicinity. I just encourage lots of insect eating birds by providing bird houses & fresh water.

I don't know if I have any true tigers... But I might, I picked some lilies up at an Amish garage sale a couple ten years ago or so. But they are way down front about 200 feet from any other lilies.... At least, I think they are still there.... I moved them from a hosta bed where they were shading and crowding out the hostas.... I think I planted them again and didn't give them away.. I don't remember now..

Ticker, you have waaaay too much room to play in!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

The problem is that I have to work for a living and just can't garden all the time. :) LOL But I am spread out a bit much....

Would be nice to be Dax080 , huh? Garden all day , every day at your leisure? I spent Saturday digging & moving lily bulbs. Had to make room for the new arrivals. Muddy from head to toe, but happy....

Wanda, I bet you looked like happy little soggy gopher. :) LOL As for me, sorry, I don't do well in the cold and cold to me is anything under 63. I used to be able to be out there in the 40s working away, but if I'm out there goofing off when it's cold now I just end up sick and seriously blue fingers.. Which reminds me I need some new Fox Gloves.....

Getting older is the pits. Bigger butt, tire too easy, lazy too many days.
