I think this is correct, Empis livida Family Empididae which we don't yet have.

This is the male, I probably have the female too as I have others but more than one female species.
CLOSED: Empis livida, Empididae
Yes Janet, I agree that looks like Empis livida.
I have created an entry for it here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/4859/
You are certainly getting a good broad coverage of the flies in your area!
Ken
Thanks Ken, only one image, had some more not perfectly focused but this shows enough.
I need a bigger MP camera (my son is going to buy me one), many of the bugs I have are too small for the 5MP I have! There are all sorts of tiny predator flies with long legs which I can just get but are too small, some only about 3mm long! It's the mixture of plants and hedge location I have that attract them I think, I had some black aphids on a dahlia's stems and watched it, there was a whole food chain going on there. Of course you have to spend time stood amongst the shrubbery when the sun shines!
Plenty more to come....
Thanks Janet, your image of Empis livida is now illustrating the Empididae in the index,
Ken
