Greetings Texans!
I'd like to try my hand at transplanting to pots and doing cuttings of plants from around the yard, any idea where I can find the cheapest source to order by mail or pots at places IN Houston?
I tried offering to pickup the leftover nursery ones from people's landscaping projects on CraigsList but no bites. I still have a few of these myself but I'm running out.
I don't mind buying pots and have priced at Lowe's, HD and Walmart. Disappointing these stores through them out by the cartload when the plants die. I'd asked once but it's a "no-freebies" policy so they can claim them as refunds from their suppliers. Again, don't mind paying, but having hard time finding them. So far Walmart has the best price for the size but wondered if there was any other options I've missed.

The only other places I might try would be Dollar Tree/Big lots/99c stores. If they don't have pots, they often have containers suitable for plants. Then, drill some holes at the bottom of the containers.
Oh, and for cuttings, I know people have used cut in half 3 liter and 2 liter soda bottles. There is something else someone uses on the rose forum. Will try to find it.

Tir_Na_Nog, I buy my containers from Kinney Bonded Warehouse http://www.kinneybonded.com/ down in Donna, TX, about 2 hours south of me. They also have a warehouse in Temple, about 170 miles NW of Houston. Although I pick my stuff up in person, they do ship.

I use 2 liter, Turkey and cake pans, plastic and other cups (learned from Frostweed all hers are in cups), milk boxes, newspaper pots and anything else I can get my hands on. I never buy pots - ever and I am rooting around 300 plants right now all in used things.
great recycling program! I have some HUGE plants to dig out and guess I'll have to break down and buy big pots. Wondering if I can use linen (don't know exact name of kind I'm thinking of) to wrap around roots?
big pots? I am thinking that just maybe you could use cardboard boxes lined with several layers of newspaper. I ahve done this before for Iris I wanted to mover but not yet... You could add a trash bag first to the box then line the bag with several layers of newspaper and then leaves, then soil. This works fine and in the end is better for everything over a pot - will last for about 8ms with no problems.
I dont like to ever ever ever buy things like pots and the what have you when I can help it. Save my money for plants, having fun with friends.

I have a raised bed I built out of boxes - well building when I get them!
I think a landscape company would be glad to give you some pots. I know that when they're changing the plants out around shopping centers, banks etc. they have them everywhere. I hate the policy with the HD and Lowe's. I've seen them throw out perfectly good plants. I asked if I could buy them and they said no they had to throw them away. Makes you want to go dumpster diving but I just don't have that much nerve!

TNN - if you're up for a little field trip, and I know a few more DG'ers here who might be, from Friday, August 24th through Sunday, September 16th, Enchanted Forest is having a 'Chip off the Old Pot' sale. They have gorgeous stuff there. I'm looking at the flyer here and it says that the things on sale will be pottery, fountains, statuary, birdbaths, iron work and more. If that doesn't grab you, the plants there ar EXTRA SPECTACULAR! It's a must see for anyone. And on weekends, they sometimes do some special things. I sometimes go just to meander through their gardens and get inspiration. I'd bet we could get a group together.
BTW - strollers are welcome there. They keep the aisles large enough to wonder around and with the large chimes and fountains, it's a baby's paradise too.

It's actually near Richmond. In a small town called Booth. Sounds far away but it's really only about 15 minutes from Sugar Land.
I bought mine on eBay. There are sellers there that specialize in bulk gardening pots and other supplies. Real cheap!

I discovered that those tall plastic fabric softener bottles (Suavetel) are GREAT for rooting cuttings cause they're TALL enough for the plant branches to stand up in without tipping over! Also, I've been collecting 6 oz. yogurt cups to start my seedlings in. Then I'll transplant into 4" pots

You might try your local "FreeCycle" on the net. I know that I'd love to give my pots away to a good home. Looking at them just reminds me of how much the deer have devoured!

City_Sylvia----you can always freecycle or craigslist them and someone will drive over to pick them up! I was fortunate to have 2 Davers give me some for free!!!! Oh how sweet!
Now I need to power wash/sanitize them. Any tips on that folks?
I order all my pots from on line sources..............so many of them..............as far as cleaning old pots.................I keep two very large containers from Walmart.................when it is time to clean...............I use water and clorox...........lots of clorox.......9-1 ratio..............leave them for 30 minutes and squish squash around.............use the water hose to clean that off and they are good to go......................

You are more than welcome.............depending on the plant, I always try to use the smallest pot for cuttings that I can.............Using too much soil-less volume can be difficult to root...........
Good tip---yes I do this also. For now just trying to dig whole plants already in the ground to relandscape.

Clorox is good for everything! I forgot about Freecycle and Craigslist.
squish squash always means I am not scrubbing.................just moving around as in handwashing clothes...........
Clorox - after meeting several history buffs I no longer use any bleach.. at all. It was made to kill - humans. I use H2O2 instead, WalMarts if I have to but feed stores have stonger and better stuff. Cleans everything and I dont have to worry about its effect on the world around me.
ohhh Mitch! We use bleach for sick Hosta roots and we dont have problems. but I understand you plight!
One of those things... I had a Jewish Lady across the hall from me at my old school that refused to use bleach, when I asked her why she shared her family was killed in Germany by the forerunners of beach.
Come on, Mitch.......................now really.................my daughter who is a physician says that Hdrogen Peroxide has its limitations and can cause more harm than good sometimes............that is just one person's understanding. She mixes 1 tablespoon of Clorox in a spray bottle and cleans down her house with it.....................all the time..........now she has everyone in the family using clorox for wiping out really bad germs..............
My son-in-law married to another daughter of mine told us to get this product called Citrus II ...........................and my daughter agreed that this is the product that she and her husband use to clean their doctor's office every night...........to kill germs............my son in law says this is what they use to clean hospitals everyday..................he is a CEO of a hospital..........It has all kinds of goodies in it................it is a fungicide against pathogenic fungi...................
Mitch, on a thread in Southwestern forum recently there was a warning about spontaneous combustion. One lady showed how her home would have burned down had it not been night and the fire was easy to see. I will try to find it.

I am aware that bleach is good in some ways, just something I will not use here after knowing about its roots... the roots of bleach go back to 1774, here is the link to the man that turned the 1774 find into a killing machine http://www.chemheritage.org/classroom/chemach/gases/haber.html you can look up more - and I know that in time they used many more worse things.
