I just planted a lovely orphaned Beauty Berry and am wondering about it's survival odds. I've seen it on most deer resistant lists for my area, but recently came across a note that it is a favorite food for white tailed deer. Not sure what to think now. Those berries sure do look delicious to me. Anyone have experience with this American Beauty and it's deer resistance or appeal?

I don't think deer go for berries, they go for greenery so I wouldn't worry about the yummy looking berries, those are more likely to attract birds than deer. Where did you see that it was a favorite food for the deer? My thought is if that was just one person who mentioned that deer always ate their plant, you should put more weight on the fact that it's on the deer resistant lists. Nothing is really deer proof, if they're hungry enough they'll munch plenty of things that are on those deer resistant lists so I'm sure there are people out there who've had deer munch this plant, but if you have it sitting next to other plants that they like better then they're more likely to leave it alone and focus on the yummier stuff first.

You can download a comphrensive list of annuals, perennials, grasses, bulbs, shrubs and trees with the degree of expected deer damage for each one from Rutgers New Jeresy Agricultural Experimental Station:

You could certainly rely on this list.

Callicarpa is described as "seldom severely damaged".

I haven't noticed any deer nibbling on mine.

Of note though, Beautyberry benefits from rejuvenation pruning every few years. I cut mine back to about a foot last winter and they look better than ever now.

Does anyone know where I can get a picture of a Beauty Berry seedling? I planted 4 kinds of seed and the dog stepped in the pan and dumped all my tags so now I don't know which is which.
