What is a Aurelian Lily? What is a Martagons?

Agawam, MA(Zone 6a)

I am new to lilies and I just love all the different kinds. I'm trying to teach my self all the different types.
I'm confused as to what are Aurelian, Maragons, Candidum Hybrids, American Hybrids, Longiflorum Hybrids and Interdivisional Hybrids. Please help.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

I came across these descriptions
for comparison's sake:
Martagon Hybrids are 4-6' w/ flowers 2-3" across. Around 25 pendent Turk's Cap shape blooms - in June and July +.
Parentage usually L. martagon and L. hansonii.
Candidum Hybrids are 4-6' w/flowers 4-5" across - Trumpet shaped w/ strongly reflected petals blooms in June - July.
Fragrant. Pendulous Turks Cap appearance. Basal rooting, shallow planting. Lime tolerant.
American Hybrids are 4-7' w/4-5" across flowers - most are Turks Cap shape and bloom in July. Bred from American species like L. pardalinum.

There is loads of information at lilies.org. Here is one page http://lilies.org/types.html

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

There is a New England Lily Society. Here you can buy your first Lily book. Called Let's Grow Lilies.
PB, don't know how much it is in USA but is $8 in Canada. You can probably find one on http://www.ABE.com or http://www.Amazon.com

"Let's Grow Lilies" is an excellent resource. If you join NALS ($20) it comes with your year membership. In fact, I was just reviewing it last night ;)

I really appreciate all your help. Thanks
Debbie

Agawam, MA(Zone 6a)

I just joined North American Lily Society. I love the site. Once again thanks to everyone.

Good for you ~ I'm sure you'll enjoy it. :)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

You'll learn so much and have a lot of fun too. Enjoy! Next thing we'll hear is you wanting to start the free seeds they give you for joining. Seed starting is fun too.

Okay...a little too fun ;)

I bet your right. Years ago I thought I would never plant bulbs that have to be stored in my area over winter. To dig them up was too much work. Guess what, now I do because I love the plants. This is the first year I started some wild flowers from seed. I'm learning so much from you all. Especially when I read your threads. Thanks
Debbie

So what is it that you love so much that you'll store it over winter? I'm willing to do that for glads.

Agawam, MA(Zone 6a)

I tried to grow glads this year, but I planted them in too much shade. Will never do that again. I planted elephant ears, Hibiscus, Lily of Nepal , Dahlias, and Oxalis. I have had the Hibiscus, Dahlias & Oxalis for years.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yeah, I've made that mistake with glads too. I assume your hibiscus is the tropical sort? I wish the hardy type came in those colors.

Agawam, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes it is a tropical. In my family it is a tradition to give a hibiscus at Christmas. For years I didn't know that they could rebloom after a rest. I wish I had all the beautiful flowers back. I think because of the colors, is why I like lilies as much as I do. I forgot to mention the wonderful smell of the orientals and trumpets. I also didn't know there is a hardy type of hibiscus?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Oh yes! The colors aren't as rich and varied as the tropicals but the blooms are monsterous in size. http://www.flemingsflowerfields.com/flowers.htm

They are absolutely beautiful. Have you ever grown any? I was thinking of purchasing one. But, I already ordered to many lily bulbs for fall. I going to have to start a new garden.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yes, that's my hand in the pic above with Southern Belle, and this is Lord Baltimore ~ both growing happily in my garden.

I, too, have a bit of a love for hibiscus.
Here is 'Pink Luna Swirl' Shorter, so I have it in front of a bed. It gets just a bout 2 feet tall.

Here's another one, that if it wasn't pouring out right now, I'd check the name, as it has escaped me.

I have Lord Baltimore and Blue River II (white) and they are beautiful. The only bad thing is that they are Japanese beetle magnets. However, they are still worth it. :)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

And another, I think I have maybe 8 or 9 of them. They work great for later season GIANT blooms.

Mags, how beautiful. :) Do you have to stake yours?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

There is a deep red one in the front that could use it, but since I only spend time staking my lilies, The hibiscus have to make due.
Just got back from the hem. society sale and I saw all sorts of things Moby could add to her naughty garden.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Do tell!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Rumbleseat Romance, was one of them. I was laughing and an older woman came up to me and asked me if I knew what a rumbleseat was, and of course, I didn't really. Then I found myself telling her all about your naughty garden, Moby.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Lordy, can't imagine what the ol' gal thought of that! LOL My DM told me all about rumbleseats, hmm.... wonder how she knows?? ;)

Is your second hibiscus pic Plum Crazy? That's a beauty and one I want to get.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

It is 'Plum Crazy' and besides looking beautiful, we love plums around here ;)

Agawam, MA(Zone 6a)

They are absolutely beautiful. Thanks for showing me the flowers

Hi
I realize this is a lily thread but since the word rumble seat came up I thought I would
put in my 2c. Years ago one of my friends had an old Ford Coupe with a rumble
seat. This car you would take out for a stroll on a nice Sunday afternoon. I personally
never sat in the rumble seat (I'm pretty tall) but from what I saw, two people would be
rather cozy/comfy. Plus, you would be outside for all the world to see. Rumble Seat
Romance?? I don't know... LOL

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Remember, I didn't name it. Lol!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I used to own antique cars in another life. I preferred rumbleseats so the mother in law had to sit where I couldn't see or hear her! Kind of cramped for "romance" :) Former mother in law, former life.
