Aristolochia seed germination

can anyone help out on Germination tips for any aristolochia? I have 4 different types that I want to grow but need help.

I found,soaking them in hot water for 12 to 24 hours(changing the water a couple of times) helped mine germinate.

I used bottom heat from my cable/DVR box and got good results.

I just finished potting my seedlings of a.ringens.....no special treatment. They were sown the same way I usually do which is a flat of dampened peat moss covered with another flat (upside down) and the whole enclosed in a kitchen trash bag til germinated. I didn't keep track of the days til germination...probably a couple of weeks. Now you have me wondering whether or not my other aristolochia seeds will fare as well or if I should soak. Hmmmmmm.....

wcgypsy, I'm going to try your method for seed growth! Especially for seeds difficult to germinate. Thanks for sharing.

Hudson has been around for a very long time..always has lots of interesting stuff. I'm afraid to look.

I bumped up this thread because I thought I should share my experience with seed germination of Aristolochia fimbriata.

When I received the seeds part of them I sowed in the usual way after having soaked it for 2 days in warm water, changing the water twice. Seeds were sown on the 31rst January and put in a heated propagator. Until now no germination yet.

Now comes the interesting part.
The other part of the seeds I decided to use the 'Deno Method'.
On 21rst February, after having soaked them like the others, I've put the seeds in a damp folded kitchenpaper put in transparent plastic bag and placed it in the propagator.
When checking this morning I was so pleased to see that one had germinated with a nice thick white root tip coming out!
That means germination in barely 11 days! I feel that the others will catch up soon. :)

did you fold the seeds up in the paper towel or leave it open? I've already got several different pipevines...A. Trilobata, fimbriata, and have seeds of A. tomentsa (sp?) coming. I already tried the A.Trilobata....soaked then did in regular seed starting soil - out of 10 seeds, 1 sprouted almost a month to the day later, and 1 about 6 days later......that was a month ago and so far nothing else. The seedlings of this are doing wonderful tho. I have another 30 or so seeds of A. Trilobata to try so figured I'd experiment some as I now have a heat mat. (haha just gotta find room on it.) but I could maybe use the satelite box too wish i'd thought of that before!! I want to get some of these others going...I mainly raise them as host plants for butterlies and want to have a variety for them to choose from.

Hi mjsponies, yes I folded up the paper towel, pressed the seeds gently so the seeds are in contact with the damp paper on both sides and didn't leave an opening, but I used a fairly large bag...

Well yes the butterflies and horses, dogs and cats all eat better than me!! Although I did manage to plant some veggies...thank goodness I have a very understanding D's SO....(-:
