CLOSED: cicada killer (hornet) vs golden digger wasp

Caledonia, MI

To ease confusion, could someone kindly post a clear explanation of differences between these to bugs? Hornet and wasp: aren't these two different names describing the SAME insect?

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Hornets are wasps; the genus Vespa, in the Family Vespidae. The wasps you mentioned are different species -

Golden Digger Wasp:

Cicada Killer Wasp (not a hornet):

And to complicate matters, our hornets are not really hornets. We just call them hornets. They are actually in the yellow jacket family. Hornets build enclosed paper nests above ground in the open; yellow jackets build enclosed paper nests in enclosed places (bird houses, etc), often underground.
