Apologies for the picture but this was as good as I could get after a week of trying. I have a whole slew of these on my spearmint and lavender but they are definitely camera shy plus they normally flutter their wings so quickly that it's hard to get a shot at all. I think the hideous heat today made them slightly lethargic.
I found a site that shows what butterflies and moths have been found in my area and I think that my little (1") guy looks like the Phaon Crescent (Phyciodes phaon):

Did I guess correctly or do I need to hang out here a lot longer?
CLOSED: Phaon Crescent?
It looks like you're right on the mark.
Truth be told I would have had to go through all the moths and butterflies from my area without claypa's help with mygypsyrose's decidedly much friendlier Crescent. Thank so much for confirming my guess.
I've always been endlessly fascinated with all the bug critters that visit my yard but never had much luck at all in identifying them on my own. I can't tell you what a delight it is to be able to have a place where people are so smart and generous in helping me ID my buggy garden visitors. A big thanks to maccionoadha and all the helpful experts here.
