Any one know how to root some oleander? I have some large cuttings I'd like to make into trees for some pots for my patio.

rooting oleander
Mickey... I haven't done any Oleanders yet, but did find this for ya from the Oleander Society on propagation. Propagation section is down by the bottom of the page. It may help if nobody else comes along.
There's no link. Try again
I went to their site and read what they had to say. If it doesn't work it's no big deal the cuttings are free. I just cut 2 large branches and put them into a container of pearlite. I hope it works. If it does the price was right.
Mickey
Opps sorry about that and sorry for not getting back to ya til now.
Do you have a willow tre e by you anywhere's? If ya do ya might try rootign soem in willow water too.
A friend in town has a neighbor that has a really hotpink colored Oleander and she moving and I want to se e if I can have a coupel cutting s off of hers , so think we gonan learn together. : )
Starlight,
Sorry I don't have any willows...Someone told me that you can water root oleander too. I took realy tall cuttings, like tree size. We'll see...
Mickey
Progress report:
I've done real good with water rooting small cuttings in water with a little bleach and then potting them up. The bottom heat is what has helped. I also cut the bottom of the stem in the middle about one inch so more water can be taken up. I cut off all flowers too.
If I have taken longer branches and hard wood so far no luck. I'm going to try and air layer. I just keep running out of time to get around to do it.
Mickey
You guys that will be interesting. I started some oleanders from seed and they took about 3 or 4 years to bloom. But, they did bloom. One wouldn't bloom until it went into a greenhouse because I didn't have enough light for it.
Jeanette
Great. Gld they going for ya! : )
I don't know what yoru winter weather like, but the one thign I did learn was not the first year to leave the seedlings sittign outside even though they was in one gallon pots and fairly sheltered. Out of 30 nice rooted cuttings I lost all but one from lettign them stay out for the winter.
I have a lot of Oleander to practice on. I have had better luck with taking shorter cuttings, about 10 " no longer. I also take off most of the leaves and and flowers. I haven't gotten any longer cuttings to root yet. I'm putting them into plain water with a little bleach.
I just potted up some that I water rooted. I have heard that water roots aren't strong. Perhaps I need to try pearlite.
Mickey
Mickey: Oleander is pretty straight forward. We used to root it by the hundreds. Just a cutting with a node or two below the soil line along with a good rooting hormone. I like Dip-n-Grow but thats me. You might also try a mix of hydrogen peroxide 1 tblspn to a gallon of distilled water. as a 2nd or 3rd day watering in.
I started A basic how 2 thread
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/892721/
It gets a bit technical in the middle so please excuse the over explanation of some of the why fors and stuff like that. Let us know how it goes.
dave
I have a friend who rooting me more since I killed my other ones off. Shame on me, a bad mommy. But he rooted all them in water, so think I wil pass on to him to try and do in soil and hormone this time.
Thanks for the tips Pughbear! : )
Starlight,
How much water did you give your plants in the green house?
Mickey
Anything shruby with semi hard wood or hard wood. I usuallylet them dry out just about comepletely before watering.
I think problems may have come from my first batch where my friend had rooted then in water and they had some roots, but maybe like Pugh said, they don't get as strong as roots in water. Either that or about now is the time he roots them and then i had put them in one gallon pots and they stayed outside all winter. Think maybe not being established good the roots may have froze and then easrly spring here is wet wet wet, so it may be possible if any of them were gonan come back they may have gotten root rot.
A third thing that I probably did wrong, was I was out cutting back all last years stems from off hibiscus and other plants and clipped the stems on these off too. After I did it, and realized what I had clipped, I thought they would come back from the roots or something, but they don't. The one that did come back came back from a side shoot.
I hoping that the news ones I get I don't croak. Storms here knocked down his tree that why he making me more. I love the color on the one he has. It a hot like deep fushia pink. Looks so pretty when blooming.
Hi everyone! I have a question to all of you, since I'm quite a newby on cuttings: How do you give heat to your pots or what do you use to give bottom heat?
I mean... I know that there are many nurseries that have complex devices with wires and stuff but could you give me practical açideas?
Many thanks in advance!
Gus.
Gus, why not just get a heat mat? They have 2 different sizes that I am aware of. The small one is large enough for 2 flats and the large for 4 flats. I found that the smaller ones is big enough for my needs. And my daughter got a large one and found that it was very cumbersome.
Jeanette
Oh, I didn't know the sell that kind of stuff.
Thanks!!!!
Gus... Do they sell Christmas lights in your country? Using them cheaper than heat mats. You hook them to alittle frame and put your seedlings a little above it and the Christmas lights heat just as well.
Wow! That is a great idea! Thanks a lot!
(Yes, we have X-mast lights)
Thanks a lot Ella!
(by the way... how are the Sweet bay seedlings? I mean... did you have any luck with the seeds I have sent you?)
Here ya go. had to hunt a bit, but here the link that Gloria posted showing about using them
http://www.gardengrapevine.com/BottomHeater.html
The part using the rope lights is about in the middle but it has other ways to on the article.
You can maybe also dmail gloria125 and ask her for in depth of how to get em set up. When I was tryign to root Camellias she suggested this method. it really great too right after the holiday stores put the lights all on sale. : )
(Nope no luck, stil have a few to sow for this winter., but found out what the problem was so hopefully these will. How about you, you get any seedlings from that big box I sent you? )
I just cut them and stick them in the ground. About 50 % root. I like rooting in the fall the best. Mostly I just forget about them unless it is real dry. I use woody material but have used the green. Remove 95%+ of the leaves.
I try rooting everything I cut. LOL from Esperanza to banyan trees. The direct to the ground has always given close to 50%. I suppose with some care you could get the rate up to 80-90 %. I have tried things people said could not be rooted like 4-6 inch rubber and Banyan tree limbs 6 feet long in the fall. I have some nice big trees 2 years later. I live on coastal sand so maybe sand is a good medium ?????
Jim
Your right Jim.. Sand is a good media. Ther eis a guy up in Ohio, can't find his website anymore, but he wrote a book about making money with rooted cuttings. he started all his cuttings in these little wooden crated beds with screen on the bottomand filled with sand.
Maybe one of these days I will find his site again.
Do you guys keep sand moist? Just sand, rooting hormones and water?
PS: Ella, I´ve founf more Sweet bay fruits if you are interested.
Ok, taking a break from cramming for exams and tried playing on google with a bunch of words and found his site.
There a whole lots of ads on the site and a bunch of links. Ya gotta read past all the writign for the ads and then you wil find pics and descriptions.
Like here one for propagting decidous cuttings in sand.
http://www.freeplants.com/frame%20set.htm
he got all kind sof info. Looks like some has been deleted and new added as he has written more and more books.
prepare to have time and patience when navigating the website. Ya need it. I get dizzy going bakc and forth and around and round, but lot sof good info in there especially for cheap and inexpensive ways to make a mist sytem and propagation beds and such.
think the home page is just http://www.freeplants.com
Gus yep, you got it. But it depends too on the time of the year and what type of cuttings ya taking too. Somewhere on the first link I gave ya he has listed all differnt kinds and types of cuttings and the best way to do them.
( and yes, please, a few more whenever ya get them, but if ya could , soak them for about 20 second sin a 9 parts water to one part bleach for twenty seconds and then rinse with regular water. that will help preserve them)
Alrighty!
