Crown of Thorn

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

My son is a firefighter and they responded to a fire to an abandoned building this spring. There was a plant growing by the house that got broken off by the fire hose. My son picked up a piece and brought it home to me. It is Crown of Thorns and is currently in bloom. Pretty big plant and rooted quickly.

That looks like the big-bloomed kind which can be quite pricey.
I have learned to love this plant and have many specimens around my yard; they complement the plumeria quite well, since they like the same conditions.
Nice find! Go check if the rest is still there... I would say.

I know, I should have. He said it was about four feet tall.

Now that's a good son! Not only does he put out fires and save peoples lives, but he thinks to rescue the plants too!

lol ecrane-thats funny.

I got one in one of the coops and was kind of scared of the thorns-esp when I was transplanting it, but I have really learned to love this plant when it blooms. They last forever! Very easy to grow

I found this plant at a local nursery, but they did not know much about it, other than to say it was a crown of thorns.
I really liked it and added it to my back garden, blooming like crazy!

Not sure what type of crown of thorns it is, any help?

I'm not sure which one it is, but you may want to consider putting it in a pot instead of in the garden--I don't think it'll survive your winters unless you bring it inside or put it in a greenhouse.

It's a very ncie one and I agree, it will not survive a frost.

Very nice. I have a peach colored one as well, but it's the small bloom variety. I love the big bloomers!

You know, I think they are hardier than we think. This is a picture of one that has lived outside in my garden for about 3 years. I believe it was from a tiny piece of one I threw in the compost pile which I later used when I planted an EE. It is not very big, maybe 3" but it comes back eack year.

And this is one of the larger flowered ones which has just finished blooming. It too has been outside for many years - at least 6 in this case. Obviously it is not very large for a plant that old but it dies back each winter then leafs out in the spring. This is the same pot it was in when I bought it and I have never changed the potting mix and I am afraid I have rarely fertilized it during the years. It is on a part of my property that does not get any irrigation - only the rain. Not wanting a thorny plant in the house I just left it out, thinking it would die that first winter, and all these years later here it is. This one is in full sun the baby one is in a fairly shaded location. Who knew????

That large one looks like mine. I have mine in a pot but the plant that my son got it from was in the ground up against the house
