Saving Butterfly Bush Seeds

Algonac, MI

Last fall I tried to save the seeds from my butterfly bush and I failed. Can anyone give me good info for this fall?
The bush is once again podding after flowering and this is where the seeds are. The seeds are in what appears to be silk surroundings after the pods open according to last years experience.
I tried to dry the seeds and I also left the silk with the seeds. None germinated this past spring.
Can someone help me on this?
THANKS!

THANK YOU, Diana. I am heading there now.

Diana, I just went to the site you suggested. I "almost" did it correct last year. I didn't allow the seeds to dry long enough nor did I place them in a jar instead of a ziplock bag.
Thanks again for your help.

you're welcome

I can't seem to find it now but there were several people discussing a few days ago that BB will bloom the first year from seed. Especially when winter sown. They indicated that it grown pretty fast. I wish I could add the link but I just can't seem to find it.

pamsaplantin... if you go to the site sent by dhemmer (above), you can find more about butterfly bushes and the how and when to save the seeds.
My one bush is providing a BIG grouping of pods and they are almost ready to harvest for seed saving. I may get up to a thousand: maybe: and if I get as many as I think, I will be happy to send you some. I will let you know in a few weeks after they are dried. Just remember I do not guarantee any positive results.
I also have several vine peach seeds. Vine peaches taste as a cross between a cantaloupe and a peach. A little tart but quite tasteeee. I will count and see how many I can send if you want a few. ONE little seed gave me a sprawling-on-the-ground vine which yeilded 11 fruit. I did trellis the vine before it got out of hand. The fruits were as big as a softball, very golden yelowish orange and they fall off the vine when ready. Let them soften a little in a warm room and they will be sweeter.

Yea, I've been to the winter sown site but I had no idea BB would bloom the 1st year until I was chatting with some other DGers. I have two BB that are loaded w/ pods but they are still very green. It's been so warm here that they don't seem to know it's fall. But today it turned chilly so maybe they'll get the message. LOL

OK, I found the site I was talking about. It's an interesting exchange of pertinent info.

My bush had quartersized orange petal flowers. Not at all like in the photos sent in by Mike.
I will try to send a pic of the pods I am in hopes of saving seeds from. They are long and quite large.

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

See if this looks like yours. Sound like its just another species.

Or maybe this one?

or maybe you are thinking of Asclepias?
Now this is where comon names cause confusion.

If its the budlejia then they are pretty easy but i think they need a period of cold and very free draining soil. Other than that its sow and grow... the seed is like dust.

THANKS, pamsaplanting, for the links. Only two were close, but not close enough for ID.
I bought 6 of these bushes from Burgess and only 1 suvrived. 1 tried and 4 never came close to growing.
MIKE...I have no idea as to "what" an Asclepis is, so I cannot relate, but I do appreciate your help. In fact, I will Google the name and try to find a photo.
Of course, Burgess could have named it incorrectly anyway. After all, they mess up so much it stands to reason.

MIKE...my butterfly bush is not an Asclepis. Hopefully next spring, I will remember to take a photo and send it to the group. It may go by anopther name or maybe it can be ID'd by the pods on it now.
NOW....if I can only remember to take a pic when the sun comes up in a few hours.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Hi Lost.. yeah take a pic of the leaf or a stem or a seed pod.. the more close ups of each plant part the easier it is to ID.
If we find it is the one we are thinking about i'll send you more seed if you need.

Cheers

Mike...the pic will be taken in the morning (Sun). I 4-got today. I hope to have a zillion seeds after podding, but I ceratinly appreciate your offer.

kqcrna Karen...that looks like [my] BB. THANKS!

So Burgess sold you Asclepias as butterfly bush? I've heard it called Butterfly weed or Butterfly plant, but Butterfly Bush is generally understood to be some kind of Buddleja. It wouldn't surprise me, but that's just outright misleading.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Sounds like dodgy company.... i guess they woud sell better than having "weed" on the label!

Asclepias i cant grow as it dies in winter over here so i guess its over to you warmer people.

FINALLY...I have a photo of my butterfly bush. At least it was sold to me as a BfB.
I also have pics of my use of windows as hurry-up-greenhouses to help my toms further. I will place these pics in the tomatoes section.

Yep thats some kind of asclepias for sure... they are not really my kind of plant as it like a warmer place....just like me!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

LostIndian: Yes, those are asclepias, commonly called butterfly weed.
Butterfly bush is the common name for buddleia

Thanks Mike and kqcrna for the ID. My bush flowered out quite large and spread wide. It didn't look like any weed I have ever seen It bunches too close for a weed to my knowledge....which isn't much. :->

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

It is a commonly grown plant. It's just called butterfly weed. Lots of people grow them.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Yes, they can be very pretty. Pinching in spring does help make it fuller and seems to prolong bloom time for me.

THANKS Group, for all of your comments.
I have been out of pocket for several days due to an electrical shortage caused by DTE and it fried several items in the house including both computers.
I appreciate the info supplied and come next spring, I will cut back my bush before it starts to grow too full. It was quite wide and flowerific this past spring. Hummingbirds as well as buttterflies visited quite frequently.
Later!
