CLOSED: Very handsome black and white bug

Forest Grove, OR

Discovered on a sidewalk in downtown Portland OR. I really wanted to bring it home with me. Until somebody tells me its real name, I'm calling it "Koshare bug," for the Hopi trickster who is painted in black and white stripes.

I thought of the Kachina before I read your post - I wonder if they're supposed to look like this beetle

andrea,
we have an entry for the Banded Alder Borer (Rosalia funebris) in BugFiles here: http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/1361/
but no images so far.

Would you please add your image to that page,

Kennedy

Thanks for the I.D.! I've posted his picture in the bug file.
