Can a small birdbath be put out for the hummer s to play in. Too hard to try and pull the water hose over the tre e bar and tie the mister noozl;e open.
Dummy me trie d spraying the trees the other day and didn't think and aimed straight up and foudn myself being misted instead. Plus where I can hand the hose ther e are flowers all under neatha nd they gonan croak with to much water comign down on them.
I been waterign my canan leave s a coupel times a day to try and help, but if I small bird bath would work, woudl be much easier, but I also have al kind s of other bird s in my yard feeding and nesting and not sure if I put a water bath out there if it woudl attract bird s of prey on my hummers.
Any more suggestions, anybody?
Bird Bath for hummers?
My suggestions Ella would be to get a solar bird bath mister/fountain. I have one that I plan to hook up soon. Unfortunately, mine only works when the sun is shining! lol But it's better than nothing at all. It came with 3 different fountain spray heads. I would imagine that the birdies would zip in and out of the water to bathe.
Here's the site where I got mine:

I little pricey for something that only works when the sun is shining, but the options were limited. I paid the same price as listed.
I would recommend not getting a metal birdbath if you are going to keep it in the sun. We have a copper one in our front garden. I didn't realize until we had put it up that the metal tends to get very warm. I haven't seen a bird in that bath yet, and it has been two months.
I have one of those tiered bird bath fountains. The water sprays out from the top of the umbrella and falls down into a small bowl underneath...then that overflows and falls into the larger bird bath bowl. I leave it out all year long with just water in the larger bird bath bowl and the doves, mockingbirds, sparrow and other small birds use it. Haven't turned on the fountain as I work until 8pm and don't want to leave it running all day long.
I forget to turn it on when I'm home but they used it a few times last year but it was always early in the morning and I never was able to grab the camera fast enough. Much too hot right now for me to sit out in the back yard to wait and watch...so perhaps when the dog days of summer pass I'll give it another try.
For now the hummies use the dew that gathers on the huge leaves of my chalice vine to bathe.

Thanks for the info and what a darling pic Cat. : ) Gues s I'll keep waterign my Canna leaves patches for now. The temps are in the 100F this week and stil no rain so it gonna be another scourcer , heat drainign week.
Great pic Cat. How cute is that.
And penne, thanks for the note on the copper or metal birdbath. I have been seeing the copper ones around everywhere and really liked them. Would have never thought about them getting hot. So glad you mentioned that. Thanks.
I have ordered some really cute cattail bird feeders to go in a certain part of my yard and there is no bird bath. Since they are made out of something that looks like metal I was going to get a matching bird bath. Now they will have to just deal with a bird bath that does not match the feeders. I don't think they will mind too much. The only thing they mind is when I am late with their dinner. lol

I have heard that if you are using the hose that the hummers will fly through the mist. I was actually watering one day out side with the hose and I did have a female do a "fly by". It was the one and only time that it happened for me.
I keep watching when I watering, but so far haven't seen mine run through the spray. I have taken to watering the lover branches of the tree and letting water drip from it and wil se e them go on the leave s afterward.
I do that as well. I only saw a hummer fly through once though. They definitely like the drops of water on the bigger leaves. I love to watch these little guys!! They make me laugh.
