Sequee, don't think that's a lily. Maybe a ginger plant or kinda like a weird white bird of paradise.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

It dould be a Ginger. (I thought they might be Ginger Lilies?) I got them in a trade a few years ago and this is the first time they've flowered. The plant structire looks like a Canna. Perhaps I will have better luck with an ID when it finally flowers. I'm waaaay too impatient! LOL!

Thanks for responding.

Cool! I can hardly wait to see the flower - at last!

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

lolll.. Patience, Sequee. Patience.. :)

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Between this and the brug buds - I'm half crazed with impatience!

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

lol...

Think of it this way, I'm still waiting for my plumeria seeds to sprout.. :) Now that's going to take a while..

There's a major thunder storm setting in! Has it popped up around you yet? The skies are dark here, but I wouldn't have known the thunder was on it if the pupster hadn't just wiggled his way between the computer and chair to seek protection at my feet. The poor thing's shaking so badly that he's rocking my task chair.

Oops! Here it come!

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

lol... I don't like the booms either. I'm actually out of town so don't really know if it's booming at home.. We travel a lot for work right now. Things should get better again in Sept. DH will be on a local project then..

And here we are today. Quite lovely!

And a shot from the other side. Still one more set of spikes to bloom, hopefully while these 2 are out!

Sequee, that doesn't look like a ginger flower.. That looks more like a canna flower to me.. Did you ever find out what it was??

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I was thinking canna too. Very pretty! Mine were turned into a salad bar by japanese beetles this year, so I definitely appreciate seeing a pretty one:lol:

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

Loll... Sequee, if you do find out it's canna, I think you'd have to overwinter them up here by us.. I got some canna tubers this year too. I have them in pots to make it easier to winterize this year..

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I thought it was a Canna, but a neighbor told me it wasn't like any Canna he'd seen. That's why I asked here. In fact, my NEXT question was going to be, "What's the difference between a Canna and a Ginger?" (My trade was for Ginger Lilies, Butterfly Lilies, Canna Lily, a Water Lily (?) and a few Brug cuttings. So far I've only had the Canna flower, and FINALLY, my brug is about to unfold it's first ever flower. I've on pins and needles waiting for THAT one!

Sequee, I got no idea then.. Canna is the only thing I can think of that looks like that.. But it is beautiful even if you don't know what it's called :)

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I think we've resolved that it is a Canna. What I'm wondering is, do the Gingers have the same leaf structure, and just the flower shape is different?

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

Sequee, I think the ginger leaf structure is a bit different too.. But then I'm basically a newbie here, so I can't really say..

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Me either, but they don't look entirely different to my ignorant eye. http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/53966/

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I thought it might the spiky flowers as opposed to the more rounded flower. But that seems kind of silly; not quite complicated enough.

Guess I need to do some research if i really want to know!

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

Sequee, post on the Canna and ginger forums.. The experts there should be able to confirm what it is and also tell you if there's a cultivar name too..

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I thought they were all lilies. Sheesh - who knew how c'fusing this could all become???

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

loll... Before I found DG, I though Daylily was a type of Lily.. So much for how much I know.. :) That's why were all here right?? To learn about gardening?? :)
