Ah Debra! This thread must have been burried when I was knee deep.. Just reading for the first time. We have seen so many birdie tragedies here that this was a breath of fresh air.. How I love a happy ending!!
Thank you for sharing and caring. Thank God for the glasses!!!

Debra, I just saw this thread. What a story!!! It's funny, because a huge orb-weaver spider has just set up housekeeping in one of my gardens, just outside the window where I'm raising my BST caterpillars. The plan was that when the BST's eclose, it would be easy to open that window and let them fly out when they're ready, right into the flowers there. Now having that spider out there is making me a little hinky about that plan! His web is SO big, and SO strong, I would just die if I let a brand new butterfly out there and he got caught in the web!
I'm so glad you were there to rescue the little hummer, and pull his web shroud away. Poor little guy!!! But what a fantastic story!!!
thea, one of those spiders has kept a web within inches of a hb feeder all summer. I kept expecting to find a hummer in her web but never did. She probably has caught butterflies since we have many of those, too. She eats what she catches so quickly that I usually don't see it. (thank goodness)
It's pretty nerve-wracking, monitoring those big guys!! The other day I saw two dragonfly wings in the web, the rest of the poor thing had already been a meal. So far I haven't seen any orb weavers near my hummer feeders, thank goodness!
