CLOSED: Water stick insect.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I haven't a clue on this one, but I did find a list of water insects.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aquatic_heteropteran_bugs_recorded_in_Britain#Family_Corixidae

I had thought it looked like a member of the Family Nepidae, but there is only one with a chance and that is a Renatra linearis, not at all like this. I wonder if it's an escapee, or another insect that is here but not recorded as here as I seem to have many of those.

I didn't actually see the insect, but it turned up at the edge of a pic I took of a water skater nymph.

The first pic I took showed it coming from under the slabs at the edge of the pond, the nymph gives an idea of the size. The nymph disappeared after I took this pic, I wonder if the insect ate it.

I found this on the unimaas.nl site while searching for mosquitoes! It's a predator of mosquito larvae and other insects.

Common name Water measurer:Hydrometra stagnorum: Family Hydrometridae: Order Hemiptera.

Well reasearched Janet and great to get another family included in BugFiles. I have created an entry for the Water Measurer (Hydrometra stagnorum) here: http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/4850/
and await your images, so that I can illustrate the family in the index,

Ken

Thanks ken, I have uploaded a few images, got more a couple of days ago!

I found it on delta-intkey as well, there's only 2 species in one Genera in the Family in Britain.

Thanks Janet, I have now used one of your images to illustrate the Hydrometridae in the index,
