The eldest one, 10 years old, made this for herself without any help from me, 'Nana' at all........

The 10 year old glued a frog on top of her lid..........and she has the turtle in the terrarium.
*********she also wouldn't go home this morning with the family...............is staying the week to make terrariums and drive the gator and the car with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The younger ones caught frogs, crickets, grasshoppers and butterflies all day...................to put in their terrariums..............thank goodness their dad stepped up to the plate to make them let all go home free by night.............

This is rather remarkable that no grandmother out there can even relate to the fun that the grands and I had.....................should have posted where my friends lurk...............sorry for the post.............

There is nothing as good as having Grandkids....I'm now working on GREAT Grandkids.....ya'll did a wonderful job. Thanks for sharing....Jo

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

You all must have had a wonderful time. They look great! ☺

No grandkids for me yet, but I have grandnieces that come to visit!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Can 'ya see that nanas can get their feelings hurt (LOL)..............thanks for your response and yes, one is still here. She is taking home so many stuck leaves, etc that I had to go get her gro lights today ...........is her mom excited.........not really (more laughing)

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Awwww, I always wanted to do one like these with my grandkids, (8 & 3) or one of those mini gardens in a box and I never did and now they live 1000 miles away...sniff..sniff...but I am visiting them for 2 weeks end of this month so I will see about doing a fun project with them while I am there that they can remember having fun with Grammy Sue.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I took the oldest one to meet her mother and siblings this morning. Now the little ones are out of joint when they saw what all their big sister had come home with.....................stuck leaves, strep leaves with the veins out, etc..........................even a set of 3 gro lights!!! (LOL) Their mom started laughing to see what she was taking home............

So, Grammy Sue, you better think ahead of a project that you and they can do...............

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't know how to make a terrerium.... Oh there is a baby cardinal on the limb just outside my window right now......sibling is in the feeder and daddy is on the ground watching out for them....

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Those are adorable, gessiegail--the terrariums and the kids! I like the little figurines. LouC, now you have an idea for a terrarium! Get some little birdie figurines...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You don't have to ooh and aah................to appease me (LOL)..................but we did have a great time and didn't even return the oldest one until today.............I found the cutest little figurines, frogs, etc...............at many places like Tuesday Morning, Big Lots and all discount stores everywhere....................

The younger ones and I had a blast catching frogs, crickets, grasshoppers, etc.............their mother, my oldest daughter, was screaming every time we touched one!!!!!!!!!!

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

Those are precious memories you made for your GKs, they'll have them and pass them along. My grown GKs remember the little projects they did with GMa.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I miss my grandparents! I remember birdwatching with my grandfather and having little tea parties with my grandma. I remember my great-great-grandpa reading to me and pretending he didn't know what certain words were so I would have to spell them out and tell him. :)

This is a little forum tucked away by itself and I never even knew about the forum until I saw your post in the Dave's Garden forum about editing! Back in the day, there weren't many forums and DG was less fragmented. I see users posting on this thread I've known for a long time, and some I've never had the pleasure to meet up with in the forums. It's so very rarely anything personal when a thread doesn't get many responses. :)

Hi GW....I'm one to number you among one that "goes way back with you"....for any new folks....Kimberley is a wonderful person....and has a voice like an angel. I will get to spend time with her again at the KY RU in Sept.....YIPPEE. Jo

P.S> Any of you that have a round up near you....go for it....they are so much fun.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Jo, you travel all the way from Arizona to the KY roundup?? Wow, it must be a good one! I must make plans to go!

Crossville, TN

OF course it's a good one...why else do we stay 2 and 3 days!! We can't get enough of each other's company!!! LOL Seeya there. Jo

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am hosting the south Texas one here..............a little nervous as I have never been to one..........but dstartz from Alice is doing the planning as she has been to them, loved them and is happy to help get everyone ready to come.

Have fun in Kentucky!!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh, that sounds like fun, Gessiegail! I'm sure you'll do just fine with dstartz's help. Hey, Jo, where do I find info on the KY one? No luck in my search so far.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hey, Jo - yep, we go way back here on DG! :)

KyWoods, here you go:

Gessie, you will have such a great time. Don't sweat having everything perfect...Honestly, don't. People don't remember the weeds, the dustbunnies, or any of that. They remember the fellowship, the laughs, the great food and the hugs! And plants trump all, of course. :D

thanks................

Ditto on GW's post!!! Jo

(Zone 1)

Oh Gail ... looks like you had a wonderful time with the grandkids! How I envy you! What great jobs they did on their Terrariums! Ewwwwww .... on catching the frogs & crickets! I will catch the little lizards but I'm with your daughter on those toads and other critters! I don't want anything to do with them, LOL.

That is too cute about your oldest grandaughter taking home all the AV & Strep leaves AND the Grow Lights to boot! But, How great is that .... getting a young one interested in propagating for the first time! I just know when she sees those first little "ears" peaking out of the soil she is going to be sooo excited! I know you will be on the phone with her a lot talking about her new plants! I think it's wonderful of you to get your grand's interested in gardening at a young age. Something they might stick with and enjoy for a long, long time but also (and most important) is the MEMORIES! I know they will cherish the memories of the time spent with you, their grandmother!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh yes, the phone calls have started.............I gave her also about 5 leaves where I knew the babies were getting ready to pop up any day..............but didn't tell her.............she called last night to tell me all about one that had popped up. She is already planning a trip for me to come help her separate the babies...................

She also put down 2 deveined strep leaves and bet me 2.00 that her babies came before mine...............she stayed all week with me.........

Now the little two are wanting to come and bring a friend to garden like the oldest got to do............can't you just see me with 2 eight year olds and 2 six year olds at the same time..............

(Zone 1)

Oh My .... I cannot imagine two 8 yr olds and 2 6 yr olds at the same time! I know I couldn't do it! One of each maybe .... but two? No way! I have a lot of patience usually, but I don't think I could handle both of those age groups at once! Good luck to you Miss Gail! Whew! That will be very interesting to hear about! I know they would have a ball ... you might be totally exhausted after that visit! :) So much fun, but so much work too!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

My grandparents got me fascinated with gardening when I was little. They raised orchids in their backyard greenhouse, had pecan, orange, and grapefruit trees (this was in New Orleans), and I loved all Granny's purple wandering jews. I still remember every detail of their back yard, even though I haven't seen it since I was a kid. They sold the place when the bad element moved in from the lower ninth ward. And now it's all gone. Sad. But I will always cherish those memories. Your grandkids will cherish these, too, Gessie!

Renee'
I am an old lady now and vividly remember my grandmother who lived next door to me. She always grew from seed, bulbs, etc...........for cutting flowers for the church (56 years every single Sunday she put flowers in the church...........also to everyone who was sick)
She slowly let us assume more responsibilities in her garden.............there were 3 granddaughters who lived around her. Finally the big day came when I was 11............she told me i could cut whatever was going into the arrangement for Sunday. I was beside myself with joy.
Then, when i was 13, she told me I was old enough to make the arrangements for church (with a lot of help from her)...............I got to do that all the way through high school. The grand finale came when I was getting ready to be a senior in high school.
She announced that she would no longer play the piano for Sunday night services...........it was my turn to take over.....................
She did each of these things with my cousins, too.
Do 'ya think we adored our grandma?
I still miss her and she has been gone for 25 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing your love affair with your grandma.............

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

How touching that you are passing on the love of gardening that you got from your own grandmother!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

As i get older and watch the generations...............it just seems to add up that we each take the best from our past and pass it on......................makes life just a little more enriching!! (LOL)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Gessiegail,
You're one of the reasons DG is such a wonderful place.....people like you.

LouC

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lou, that is the nicest thing anyone has said to me...............thanks and the same to you!!!!!!!!!
I am sooooo sorry you are going to the mountains instead of the shore this year..............

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Nothing written in stone yet.
