A hummer day!

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

They were kind to me today, and gave me some nice photo ops.

And since coming here nearly 9 years ago, I saw my first Western Tananger today!. Alas, no images of him.

I'd say female Anna's.

Please tell me what camera you are using to capture those little darlin's. I am in the market but there are too many choices out there! Thanks

The camera is Canon EOS 30D.

Resin, I've been told we only had the Rufous here, but even in the bright sun, I thought this little hummer seemed awfully light in color. And just prior to getting these shots I'd been hearing about a yellow hummer seen by several at the local pow wow the previous day. I know they have Anna's year round in Umpqua Valley.

Earlier this season, before the young were fledged, I had a very light grey appearing female fly right up to my face. I never saw her again to attempt photos.

This photo op presented itself as I was trying to relocate an unfamiliar bird I'd just seen. It was tananger or oriole sized, sleek like both, and very dark in color, with a black head and black wing bars. Any ideas for me to check out?

Just a bit ago I heard the wingbeat of a hummer in the ulitity room. I got the dogs out, shut the door, removed the window screen and hung a feeder in the open window. I could not encourage the little bird out, and finally resorted to trying to catch it midflight.

It peeped loudy as I caught it, and then was completely still. Usually when caught, there's a bit of flutter, but not this time. Now I've got it in one hand while changing to the smaller camera lens w/ the other. Pix aren't very good, but I snapped four images, and then the little bird was gone from my hand! Yahoo!!!

I'm so happy the bird is safe! I've found a few too late. I try not to have any bright color visible from the doorway, but I need to keep the door open in daytime for the dogs.

WOW, great shots! I'm glad the little guy was okay. I was afraid, when I was reading what you wrote and saw the thumbnail, that it had died. Must've just been really scared, huh?

Rufous would have an orangey-red base to the tail, which yours clearly doesn't. I'd be surprised if you didn't get Anna's; if not breeding, then on post-breeding dispersal is probably going to be the best time to look for them, which is about now.

It is. The males have moved on and the young have fledged. I am seeing a few that are very light in the front, but haven't been able to get images. I thought I'd seen one (or more) without the white tips on the tail, but can't be sure because they move soooo fast.

Darn it, to document the different ones I need images.

I could be seeing the Black-chinned, or Calliope too, according to area. The Allen's might even be this far north from time to time. I'm not very far from California.
