On the sweet potato vine. It's about the same size as a lady bug. Odd though, because it looks like it has a little bubble around it.
Recognize it?
Thanks,
Deb
CLOSED: little orange beetle?
It looks like the Golden Tortoise Beetle (Charidotella sexpunctata): http://bugguide.net/node/view/10178/bgpage

Kennedy: Of course. Well, I should've known, because I just found the Mottled Tortoise Beetle on the same vine a couple of weeks ago. They do seem to love that sw. potato vine.
Thanks for the I.D.
Deb
Have you seen the bug in its gold stage? It looks just like 14K gold and when you disturb the bug it turns the color that you see in your picture above. It's a pretty cool bug--I carried one to our extension agent and he didn't know what it was. I even took it to work with me in a plastic baggie with sweet potato leaves to eat. He was perfectly happy in that baggie til I let him go. They are rough on an ornamental sweet potato vine, tho. SheVerne
